So many great pickups for everybody already!

I had an awesome experience with a board member on this one. (Thanks, Ron!)...and I just got it back from PSA today.

Rhotchkiss 01-12-2018 05:11 PM

Awesome Steve! Congrats. Been watching that on eBay for a while and glad someone put it in a slab and put it in their collection. Great card.

As an aside, it's refreshing to see that PSA actually got one of these right....

I just picked up the Jackson today -- thank you Ken! - and the Wagner a few days ago.

Wow, nice haul.

Love those Cobb PCs. How cool is it to say “Cobb Rookie”?

It is...but none of those are his rookie...He has his w601 post card from 1906 which predates all those...

Jay Wolt 01-12-2018 07:17 PM

Steve love the Chief Pirate back

Jobu 01-12-2018 08:55 PM

Steve - I have always thought the Meyers is a great card, congrats!

Ryan - Holy. Crap.

I love all of the Cobbs.

Kenny - The Wheat run is great. I admit to chuckling that the last domino to fall was a Sweet Cap :D

brass_rat 01-13-2018 10:50 AM

Thanks, guys!

If anybody happens to remember where this card came from, I'd love to see a copy of the original auction catalog. The previous owner had it for over 15 years but couldn't find the invoice that confirmed where he bought it.

Cheers,
Steve

Trimmed version of Jeff's 1907 Tigers cabinet, but the clarity and warm sepia tones make this a true beauty!

1928 NL designated hitter letter

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up this letter signed by former NL President John Heydler. In it he talks about the NL proposing the DH.

“At one of our final League meetings held at the old Waldorf — it must’ve been 8 to 10 years ago — the League passed unanimously a recommendation to the Rules Committee, allowing a pinch hitter for the pitcher.”

The story behind the NL's ill-fated proposal can be found by clicking here.

The CooperstownExpert.com site has autographs of all but three HoFers who debuted in the Major Leagues since 1900. Hope you enjoy it.

Tyler 01-16-2018 03:18 PM

I love it Marty.
I am currently in the same mindset regarding displaying items. Looks great.
I'll try to post some pics in this thread before the end of January.
Also, that Chief Meyers Pirate mis-cut??!!?? Wow!

Turner, that Cobb belongs in your collection...nice!

cdn_collector 01-16-2018 04:38 PM

Yeah, I agree with Tyler. That looks great, Marty.

I particularly like that the notebook cover and M101-2 share the same image, except that they removed Bugs Raymond and kept the rest of the picture in tact.

Cheers,

Richard.

OT. The next Pirate victory parade. Surprised that Nutting paid for the uniform. Tobacco and pipe were extra:

Amazing Deacon White Chris, congrats!!

A couple recent pick-ups you don't see every day, a Lone Jack Foutz and Helen Dauvray Ward OJ.

Thanks Luke for helping me knock off this very difficult EPDG back! Now, if only I could find a portrait with cap AB 460. Portrait with cap and Glove at Hip Uzits are both 1/1s so may never get those, but this gets me to 41/45 backs for the T206 McGraw back run. Its been quite a journey.

Rhotchkiss 01-19-2018 08:32 AM

Congrats Eric. I know that feeling -- its great, but then only galvanizes the ones you still need!

And Luke is a major asset. He has helped me and so many others. Great stuff!

Those are some cool postcards, Glen.
That's Red Sox mainstay Hal Janvrin in the front row of the Camp Devens card. SABR bio confirms it: http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/80f3a62e BBRef shows a minor league team for Streator for the years 1912-1915 but a little googling yielded the info that the Reds were a popular town ball squad dating back to the 1890s and before. I cobbled together some excerpts from a city history, chronology a bit unclear, that gives a glimpse of their story. That's a fine looking postcard, a classical assemblage of ballplayers.

rainier2004 01-19-2018 12:47 PM

Awesome Eric...ever going to expand the McGraw search?

e107? '94 Betz?

Hey thanks! Much appreciated Steven! I am certainly open to other options. Have a nice T3 and a Felix Mendelsohn and a couple of postcards. Those would be rather tough issues that you mentioned! I need to start a thread with the run so far. Just takes a lot of time to get all the pics loaded.

There will be a '94 Betz at the next LOTG Auction :D

Edited to add: sorry, I consigned this one to REA, not LOTG! Couldn’t keep them straight with my consignments.

Freakin auction season! Can’t be that time again already?

h2oya311 01-19-2018 09:43 PM

Oops, I meant REA, not LOTG. I kinda have the inside track on stuff like this...or rather, I know this because it’s my consignment! LOL! :D

Both should be excellent auctions happening shortly after I get my tax refund and meager bonus! Can’t wait!

oldjudge 01-19-2018 11:40 PM

Chris-Great pickup on that Deacon White Old Judge. If we were to redo the Old Judge book I’m pretty sure that we would list White as the toughest HOFer to find a card of.

The difficulty in finding the card, the price and the fact he was on the 1925 and 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates offset the bullseye in the card:

The quality of people here on Net54 never ceases to amaze me. Just when you think you couldn't possibly have any more amazing dealings with folks, you do.

Two really enjoyable deals with two sage collectors here this past month. It's been a real pleasure getting to know them and chatting with them recently.
You couldn't hope for better people or cards. Here's to Net54. :D

Just kidding. We are of the same mold somewhat, with respect to centering. Nice pick up. You probably feel about the same way as I did recently, picking up an almost perfectly centered '39 Ted Williams (already shown too many times).

DeanH3 01-21-2018 05:22 PM

Thanks Leon! Your Williams is a monster for sure.
