Early Record / Guide / "Dope" Booklets

Posted By: Kevin Andrews
As a fall out from my card collecting, I started collecting prewar baseball record / guide / "dope" booklets. All of what I've collected to this point has come from eBay, but I've never been able to find an information source on what exists, or an "expert" that knows what might be out there. Several examples of what I have are shown below. Who might be the person to talk to in this area or is there a resource that might list the years and what was printed?

1908 Newark Evening News - "Just Baseball" - I have 1908, 1911 and 1912. Any others printed?

1909 Nestor Tobacco Baseball "Dope"

1911 Facts for Fans - I have 1911 to 1914. Any others printed?

1917 New York American - James J. Posted By: Dan Bretta
That would be an interesting collection - It seems I see new ones popping up on ebay all the time that I've never seen before. I don't know of anyone who is an expert in this collecting niche. Perhaps you could be the first? There are so many areas of memorabilia unexplored that we could probably all write a book at some point in our lives.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
There really would be almost an unending search for these types of booklets as you had newspapers, magazines, beer companies and others printing them.

Here's one from the Lincoln Chiefs for the Western League

Do you have other years?

1912 Facts for Fans

1914 Facts for Fans

Posted By: barrysloate
I'm not an expert but I have a copy of Anton Grobani's "Guide to Baseball Literature" which is indispensable if you are collecting books or pamphlets. However, the book can be a tad expensive.

Posted By: barrysloate
Grobani compiled a comprehensive bibliography of baseball books, pamphlets and guides in 1975. Every booklet on this thread is listed. Regarding your question about "Just Baseball", it was published every year from 1909-16. It is an invaluable reference but is hard to find and can set you back a couple of hundred dollars.

Posted By: Joseph
It should also be noted that Martino Publishing reprinted the Grobani book at an $85 list price (still a lot of $) a few years ago. You might still be able to order from their web site. Also, though the book is good it is a very spartan effort, design-wise...

Posted By: barrysloate
I didn't know it was reissued, that's great. Since the original has no book listed after 1975, an updating would be useful, but there are so many baseball books on the shelves these days that it would become a tough task.
