Finally found a SECOND Spalding Guide Cuban Edtion

I was lucky enough recently to pick up (for a very low price no less) an 1906 edition of Spalding's "Guia Oficial Del Baseball de Spalding" Most people don;t know that from 1906 to 1918 Spalding published a number of guides in Spanish that centered on the Cuban leagues. The later editions are even better as a number of Negro leaguers like Pop Lloyd are featured. While there are only a few pictures in the 1906 edition the has a team photo of the Almendares teams that is a great illustration of the absudity of the color line for American baseball as players like Marsan and Almedia were judged light enough to pass and play in the majors while teammates like Hidalgo and Garcia were to dark and had to play in the Negro Leagues if they wanted to play in the US.

Nice pick-up, I spotted it with only a few minutes left in the auction and tried in vein to e-mail the seller to see if more Cuban League pictures were included but there was not enough time. I ended up placing a minimal bid and was the underbidder.

Jason- great pickup. I've seen several of them and as memory serves there was some indication on the front cover that it was a Spanish edition. I don't see anything on your guide that distinguishes it from an American issue. Either I'm remembering wrong or there are variant covers.

Barry

Your memory is correct the later editions have covers that have over prints that indicate its the Spanish edition

That makes sense. Thanks.

After seven years of searching I finally found a second Spalding guide Cuban edition. I believe that it’s from 1916-17 (covers and first section is missing). Has some great photos including what I believe is an image of the Indianapolis. ABC’s on their first trip to Cuba with a young Oscar Charleston. The condition may be poor and it may be incomplete but it’s an item so rare that I am more them willing to overlook the issues. At this rate I should find copies of all the guides by 2090

Awesome find!

Players # 1 and 2 look like the Taylor brothers, which would match your guess of 1916-17 Indianapolis ABC's.

Congratulations. I love the thrill of the hunt but 7 years is a long time! Good luck and happy collecting.
