t206 Boston Find and Back Damage

Posted By: James Feagin
Wonder how bad the back damage is. Even with a NMT front, what's the highest grade you've seen for a card with glue or tape damage?

http://www.beckett.com/estore/news/?eskin=beckett&a=7417&s=1

Not sure if this gives me any more confidence with BVG.

James

Posted By: bigfish
I have seen many of the cards. The backs are not bad at all. Very little paper loss. There is glue residue on most though. If they were to cross to sgc they would get hammered for the glue. Nice looking cards though.

Posted By: barrysloate
The cards were glued in a scrapbook, removed, and some received grades of EX+ and EX-MT. That doesn't sound right.

Posted By: James Feagin
Is BVG inflating grades a tad for the sake of grading a "find"? If BVG would have graded them a "2" or "3" there wouldn't be front-page fodder. Now that there are some higher-graded examples, that gives BVG the premise of being a big time vintage grader, just in time for the National. Just my silly, and probably wrong conspiracy theory

James

Posted By: barrysloate
Just to stir up some food for thought...this post shows that we all seem to agree the BVG cards are probably overgraded. Has anyone ever felt on the other hand SGC grades too harshly, or is there no such thing as too harsh?

Posted By: Patrick McHugh
Barry you bring up a great point. For the last year or so SGC graded cards in 50 and above really look nice. Do not know if grading standards have changed but i have bought some really nice sgc cards that to me really look great.

Posted By: John S
Beckett is just attempting to get a slice of the pie. I have no real issue with their grading; seems to have the same pros/cons of the other three. Only the market will show if there is room for four. I personally only think there is room for two.

Posted By: scott brockelman
If these people who find these scrapbooks would let someone remove these cards the proper way they would do so much better. Each and every card could have been salvaged and graded as it appeared with no downgrade, if they just would leave it to someone who knows what they are doing.

What a shame!

Scott

Posted By: barrysloate
Scott- I agree but depending on the kind of glue, sometimes these cards practically fall out with just a little prodding. Problem is if just a tiny bit of paper is lost, there goes the whole grade. If these cards were glued securely and they were ripped out, then that's crazy. A conservator may be expensive, but if you can get high grade cards out of it it will pay for itself many times over. Most people don't even realize what paper conservation is.

Posted By: warshawlaw
On water-based glue a soaking in distilled water can remove the card from the scrapbook with no damage. There was a thread some time ago about this issue.

On oil-based glue it may be possible using some nasty solvents to remove the cards without tearing. There is likely to be some staining residue but that's still nicer than torn paper. The easiest/most convenient solvent to use is called "Bestine" and is a form of rubber cement solvent available in most any art supplies store. I got the info from a paper conservator who uses it to clean paper artwork.

Posted By: quan
here's a close up of one. didn't know the card i bought was from the find until i read this thread. it's a bvg 4.5, card looks EXMT all around except for (what i thought was staining)probably the glue. scott i will be bringing distilled water, a bowl, and cracking equipment to your table. am i missing anything else?
