So Many Auctions - What’s Your Favorite Offering?

1 Attachment(s)
Currently the following major auction houses are running selling prewar cards/items: Mile High, Leland’s, REA, Heritage, LOTG, and Memory Lane. Since these are all major AHs, most of whom advertise here and all of whom are very well known to this board, I think it’s safe to assume that nothing in this thread will be “outed”. One rule, you cannot name one of your own consignments

So many auctions, so many incredible cards, photos, memorabilia, etc. Of all the items offered in these current auctions, which is your favorite and why?

This is mine- 1917 Collins-McCarthy Hornsby Rookie, in Memory Lane. This is a great looking example of a super-difficult rookie card of one of the game’s best of all time. You don’t see these often (20 total on combined PSA-SGC pop reports including blank backs), and when you do, they almost never look like this.

As an aside, my favorite card of all time is the Cobb-Wagner PC796 (in REA), but those actually come up every now and then, so it’s my close second

Casey2296 04-13-2023 08:38 PM

That Hornsby would be a nice add to your collection Ryan

So many great cards to choose from if I can grab 1 or 2 I'll be happy.

Lucas00 04-13-2023 08:42 PM

I'd be lying if I didn't say it was this Gibson photo in Rea. But truth be told the amount of auctions going right now is to the point of Harming sales imo. Way wayyyy too much all at the same time imo. I can't come close to keeping track.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...de47eaed26.jpg

Phil, I have a Hornsby (SGC 2), but it pales to the one in ML

That Gibson photo is Beast!

The E135 Collins-McCarthy Hornsby and PC796 Sepia postcard of Cobb and Wagner are two of my favorite cards.

The combined PSA and SGC pop report of the PC796 Cobb and Wagner postcard is also 20. Quite a coincidence!

Was listening to the Jason Smith show when I opened this thread. He was talking about the Jets getting Aaron Rogers and referenced the movie, Pulp Fiction, in the diner when Jackson says, "We're all gonna be 3 little Fonzie's here and you know what Fonzie was? Fonzie was cool."

I like the m101-5 Ruth in HA better than the e98 Cobb with a higher estimate. Lot's of nice stuff coming up. gl all.

This thread refreshed my recollection on a card I had seen, that I had wanted to bid on, but had forgotten about. I might have remembered anyway.

I think there are to many great cards at great auction houses going on at the same time

I am on sensory and budgetary overload.

I am on the sidelines watching (but monitoring) since I recently I had a big pickup

But these are two monsters I think would look great in any collection but are rare and I love the eye appeal of both

oldjudge 04-14-2023 07:39 AM

My favorite card is the Deasley Yum Yum in LOTG (not mine). A rare card in fantastic condition.

great thread id love to see a darby chocolate complete box of a hall of famer ,,good to dream

3finger1908 04-14-2023 08:43 AM

my favorite offering will be the one(s) that I so-called "win." I have a few consignments, but overall I'm hopeful the supply surge will be good for buyers.

Snapolit1 04-14-2023 09:15 AM

Wonder if this is the same Gibson photo Probstein had listed for a while. Don't see the listing up anymore. I think he was asking like a million for it if I am remembering correctly.

the offering that I find most interesting is this one:

https://catalog.scpauctions.com/Newl...-LOT54123.aspx

if you are not familiar with William Clarence Matthews, see:

https://www.mlb.com/news/featured/wi...ackie-robinson

I'm an Andover collector, but I would be shocked if these old high school baseball programs get a bid at that price. I just sold the 1901 class book, in which he's omnipresent, for relative pennies

Thus far, three lots have caught my eye….the Hornsby, the 1914 CJ Alexander, and this N28 Anson which is well centered and clean unlike so many which have high grades but the bat touches the top border.

atx840 04-14-2023 10:28 AM

This combination is very tough to find, I think 3-4 total known.

If I had a blank check to bid on items, I would go all in on this Ruth.

Schlesinj 04-14-2023 02:36 PM

Some serious photos in these auction as noted. Also, great Cuban cards. The Mackey 1924-25 Aguilitas and Cooper 1923-24 Billiken in particular. Of course, the 1924-25 Aguilitas Charleston but that will fall out my price range.

I like these 2 Tharps in Memory Lane--tougher cards--and nice high grades

Matty type 1 photo in his officers uniform

As a disabled army veteran, this is an incredible item

It’s likely out of reach for me but I’ll try

Ha. I am not on that Hornsby. I am happy with my existing example. But if I didn’t already own one, I would be all over it.

Don, that Matty photo is very cool. It’s a real shame how he died - way too young

Pete, I am with you on re that 1896 Baltimore Cab- totally awesome.

Oh man, pretty sure that ball was featured on antiques roadshow a few months ago. One of the coolest things I've seen on there.

I realize SCP auctions was not named in the thread, but they have an auction closing on the 29th, and have some things I really want.

The first picture taken of Jackie Robinson after he joined the Montreal Royals on March 4, 1946.

Also, the first picture taken of Jackie the day the Dodgers signed him (April 10, 1947). Image was also used for one of his 1947 Bond Bread Rookies (though they changed the name on the Jersey from Montreal to Dodgers): https://robertedwardauctions.com/auc...-white-sleeves

Last, an incredible Gold Border Mathewson with no chips.

Snapolit1 04-16-2023 11:51 AM

SCP is amazing for photos and memorabilia.

Another great ball on Lelands is this one. I was raised in Billings MT, and to me this is the most fantastic item in the entire auction. Out of my realm.

My favorite is the E95 Honus Wagner PSA 7 at Memory Lane. Although I really like the M110 Wagner and Wagner/Cobb Post Card.
