Louis Sockalexis Photo Found.....Maybe.....Hopefully

Posted By: Justin
I've been a long time lurker, and I haven't posted anything on this website in well over a year simply because I haven't had anything worth mentioning until now. I recently acquired an old photograph with pencil writing on the back that reads "sockalexis." Being an avid baseball fan and collector, I immediately thought of Lou Sockalexis. I tried to find some pictures of Lou to compare the one I have too, but I couldn't find a lot of pictures of him. Hopefully, some of the experts here can help me shed some light on this. Here is my photo:

Does anybody think that this could be a young Lou Sockalexis? Am I a sucker of wishfull thinking? If the word sockalexis wasn't written on the back, I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it, but my photo looks a lot like the picture of Lou that is on the book cover indian summer By the way, if this is obviously not him, please don't make fun of me too much.

Posted By: Rhys
I do not think it is him. I have owned some original photos of him in the past, including my nicest one which is currently in Mastronet, and grew up in the town he was from in Maine. I have probably seen every known Sockalexis image there is of him. I am almost positive it is not him. However, he had a few brothers, one of which was an Olympic Marathon Runner in 1912, the same Olympics as Jim Thorpe so there is a chance it could be his brother. There were a lot of men with the name Sockalexis around 1900 in Central Maine because Lou's father was the chief of the penobscots and their lineage was strong.

Posted By: Justin
That was another dilemma I had. I thought to myself, "could sockalexis really be all that common of a name?" I didn't realize that name was common in the Maine area during the 1900's. If this isn't Lou, I personally think this man might be related. I may never figure this mystery out, but I still think it's a great find! Thanks for the info Rhys!

Posted By: Rhys
There should be pictures of Lou's brother online somewhere since he finished fourth in the 1912 Olympics. He is the forgotten Indian of the Stockholm Olympics because of Thorpe, but that was seriously one athletic family!

Rhys
