A postcard of Harley "Pete" Wood (Smoky Joe's brother) at the University of Kansas. Pete's actual postcard that he sent to his cousins back home in Ness City, KS in 1909.

1880 baseball postal card

This August 24, 1880 postal card to the Haymaker base ball club of Bellville, Ohio from the Fredrickstown base ball club from Fredrickstown, Ohio is one of the earliest postal cards I've seen referencing baseball (I don't remember seeing one from before 1880), and is the earliest example of a base ball challenge sent as a postal card I have seen.

Bicem 02-13-2015 08:10 AM

Another from Johnson/Cheney Day...

I really dig this, nice pickup. I seriously considered trying to buy it but held off - I am happy to know that it went to a board member, thanks for posting it.

Great pickup Jeff, glad you got it.

Bbpostcards that Jonson/Cheney card isn't from Oregon or the Pacific Northwest. Don't be getting into my Kansas cards. :)

1906 Shreveport Pirates / Southern Association

I thought Southern collectors might like this one of the Shreveport Pirates of the Southern Association. It's postmarked 1906, very early for a team postcard. Two years later Chick Gandil and Zach Wheat played for them.

I forgot I had this one:

bcbgcbrcb 02-15-2015 10:18 AM

Had that one for a number of years, Dan. WaJo was always one of my favorites. Glad to see it went to a good home via the auction route.

vintagehofrookies 02-15-2015 10:27 AM

And Thank You Phil for letting it go as I Love it! Its my favorite WaJo. This and the Lajoie were huge for me as that Lajoie is one of my favorite HOF Rookies. I know I'm selling alot of my vintage but these are 2 you will NOT see on the BST!

Bicem 02-15-2015 10:50 AM

Thanks Jim.

The Novelty Johnson is a nice card, may be the only from the set where I prefer the pc796 counterpart though, closer-up cropping of the image and they got his name right. Both are great cards though!

Here's a C.1925-33 Real Photo Postcard of Mickey Cochrane. Thanks greenmonster!

bcbgcbrcb 02-19-2015 08:48 PM

Very cool postcard, Jeff. My research shows that it's either 1929 or 1930 based on the uniform style, same both years.

jb217676 02-19-2015 09:03 PM

Thanks Phil! The reverse has an AZO stamp box with the four squares so that's how I got my dates, thanks for narrowing it down for me!

Bicem 02-19-2015 09:14 PM

Very nice, reminds me of your Grove.

jb217676 02-19-2015 09:17 PM

That's funny you mention that Jeff, I was just looking at those two postcards side by side!

1906 V.O. Hammon Publications, Chicago #320 Postcard

I was born in Aurora IL, so this postcard has special meaning to me. It depicts a "Bunch of Baseball Fans" standing outside the Beacon-News Building (the town's newspaper published continuously since 1846) getting updates on the 1906 World Series between the Cubs and White Sox. There was probably a chalkboard in the window where ticker-tape updates were relayed and posted for all to see.

It's been five days since a post on this thread. Too long.

Here's 1911 Northwestern League batting champ Art Bues looking confident at Yesler Way Park in Seattle. Postcard was mailed from Seattle by Bues back to his hometown.

What's that kid doing in that basket?

You should have waited until you were at least age 15 to start birthday-celebrating like that, Jeff.

This private mailing card showing Pittsburgh's Exposition Park in the background is the earliest card intended for mailing I know of which shows a major league stadium (left side, in the distance). The card is postmarked September 21, 1903, just 10 days before the start of the first World Series game in history between the Boston Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates on October 1 at Boston's Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds.

My website (link below) has galleries of early baseball postal cards, unusual baseball postcards, and pre-1920 World Series related postcards if you're interested in seeing more.
