100 Years Ago Today - January 12, 1917

As World War I raged in Europe, German Ambassador, Arthur Zimmermann had
on January 11, 1917 transmitted a secret telegram to Germany's Ambassador in
Mexico. This telegram proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico
in hopes of keeping America out of the European War. Within three months America
would, nonetheless, be drawn into the Great War.

The next day, January 12, 1917, a well-known confectionery company of the period,
the Philadelphia Caramel Company was ordered by the U.S. District Court of New
Jersey to liquidate their assets and a receivers sale took place on the grounds of their
former candy factory - exactly 100 years ago today!

Having been in business for seventeen years the company who provided us the
classic E95 and E96 baseball sets officially closed their doors on that date. I've
attached a newspaper ad announcing their receivers sale.

In the very near future I will be having a manuscript printed in book form. Included
in the book will be details as to how the war played a part in this company's demise.
