I read somewhere where these bakelite pins were given out to women at Ladies Nights. Have no proof and don't remember the source. Anyone else heard this?

Here's a Forbes Field "Ladies day" sign

Every time I see the title of this thread I say to myself "oh what a night". It is quite subconscious.

Kool Forbes "Ladies Day" sign.

@Leon - Kool and the Gang can be quite catchy.

Check out this awesome commercial about 'Baseball Optimism', with a Kool and the Gang song.

I had not heard that, Mike. Are these things for sure Bakelite?

Rob - This type of pin has always been described as Bakelite and the plastic appears to me to be just that. What do you think it is?

I never gave it any thought. Apparently, Formula 409 can be used for a quick and reliable test.

Well, it looks like the Reds were inclined to entice ladies into Crosley Field back in the day....

Some nice discounts on Ticket prices for the ladies... only .49 cents for General Admission!

Yes, that one is mine. Just one of those things I was very lucky to get years ago. I think maybe 4-5 of them survived.

The man who came up with Ladies' Day was a former MLB player himself, Abner Powell. He played for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles from 1884-86. He also came up with the idea for the rain check and the infield tarp. A pretty innovative man. Here's a run-down of those accomplishments in his own hand:

Not exactly on point, but certainly on the subject...

I was away for 5 days for the Holidays, and always nice to come home to a package from a purchase last week.

I took a chance last week on a Cornell scrapbook that didn't show any sports items in the pictures, but the ebay listing description mentioned "some sports programs". Turned out to be a great find, and one of the more exciting recent pick ups I have had.

The scrap book belonged to Mary B. Finch, '28. Mary attended Cornell from 1924-1928 and the scrapbook chronicles her days in '24 and '25. In addition to being heavily involved in music, theater, and the social scene - Mary was an avid athlete. The book details her involvement in Intra-class/intramural Baseball, Hockey, Tennis and Basketball. Mary collected some programs and other sports ephemera too.

A highlight is a great photo, by JP Troy (who I collect), of her Freshman Baseball team, and two game action photos.

Here is a link to some of the other sports items found in the scrapbook:
