REA surprises

I realize the auction isn't over yet...but I am surprised at some prices so far.

One that stands out is the e102 Cobb...psa 5 I think. It's really nice...but 20K+ nice?????

PSA 9 Rose Rookie seems a bit lower than in the past artificial run up.

Ridiculous prices for o smith/r henderson rookies...I mean seriously!!!!

Stonepony 10-29-2017 02:23 PM

I agree, I thought I was in the running for that e102 Cobb....until it blew up

btcarfagno 10-29-2017 05:41 PM

Did you ever place a bid at an auction and later pray that someone would outbid you? That happened to me with this REA auction.

My surprise (and relief) was when someone finally did late this afternoon. Big sigh of relief.

..I've done that after over-bidding to start with and then suddenly remembered that there's a 20% BP....

really Kevin? if u really wanted to sell a card...or multiple in your case...it doesn't take years and years to do...atleast for most people!

You're right, I agree...

Michael Peich 10-29-2017 05:54 PM

"anger and disgust"?

Come on, Kevin, that was not what Pete indicated as I read it. He made a statement of fact, one that I have also felt. But there was no "anger and disgust" feeling when I was glad that someone had outbid me.

This is a public forum where we share our mutual interests. Let's keep it at that.

Cheers,
Mike

right Mike...I'd say a feeling of mild relief is more like it!

I've had that happen a few times... and looking back now, I'm also sorry that I didn't get a couple of those items.

Me too, no idea what I was thinking, funny you said that I almost started a thread with that as the topic. Best outbid email I ever got.

Yup. I forgot Gray with stats was the rare T205 variation, and bid too high on the Gray no stats by mistake. If someone wants to outbid me in the last couple hours here, that'd be great :D

The beautiful E98 Matty just left my orbit

edjs 10-29-2017 08:14 PM

The D310 Berry at $1400 surprises me. I know it is highest graded, but so are the others, and some of those are lower pops.

Agreed

btcarfagno 10-29-2017 08:29 PM

Both of the women in baseball lots are far above what I would have expected. The 1890-91 Young Ladies Baseball Club cabinet isn't easy to find but not super tough either. I see one or two per year trade hands. Usually in the $300-400 range. This one is at $840 with the sauce. Woof. And the group of 20 N48's at $2,750 with sauce. Most are in really bad shape. I dunno. Maybe they are worth $130-150 each. But buying 20 would think the per card would come down.

I just got the first warning e-mail. Why do I feel like a pony that got the whip on his flank, heading into the home stretch?

If this auction were a horse race I'd be headed to the glue factory. I got shut out of the lots I was interested in some time ago.

There are 2 '55 Clemente PSA 6's. One is about 4500, one is 2500. I keep looking but I can't seem to tell what would be driving a $2000 difference.

The PSA 5 and PSA 6 '54 Bowman #66 Williams are going much cheaper that what I paid for it in April.

My theory that card prices only go up when I am actively looking for the card has been validated!

I think that theory applies to many of us!

spacktrack 10-29-2017 09:26 PM

Fair warning. The auction will close without notice prior to 12 am midnight eastern.

How much? :) I should add, we all thank you for ending your auction at a reasonable time.

x2drich2000 10-29-2017 10:08 PM

I know they are tough especially in "higher" grades, but $8k plus juice for the lot of 3 E105s really shocked me.

The Honey Boys (especially Rousch and Speaker) went for less than I expected. Everything else went for much more than I could stand.

CW 10-29-2017 11:28 PM

Henderson PSA 10 at $21,600 and Jordan RC PSA 10 at $16,800 (both include BP) were somewhat low and surprising compared to past results.

glynparson 10-30-2017 03:56 AM

I agree, those saying the Henderson 10 went high have not been paying attention I guess. It might be higher than we feel it should be, but relative to other sales it was in no way out of line (high).

Bliggity 10-30-2017 05:32 AM

Here's a wild one. VCP average on a PSA 6 1953 Bowman Mantle is about $1,700. A PSA 6 last night went for $4,800. And a BVG 6 went for 6,000. Both were nice-looking cards, but that seems crazy.

Another PSA 6 went for 1320, but it wasn't centered.

Agreed. The pop of 10's on the 1980 Henderson is incredibly low (lots of 9's), but to pay $20k+ vs. $300+ for the difference between a 10 and a 9 is pretty insane!

Prince Hal 10-30-2017 09:35 AM

How about the "possibly unique" 1980 Topps/Pepsi Guidry going for $6,000!

To a elder Yankee fan that remembers (that's me) who can't afford seats at The Stadium (me again) could be worth it just for someone with a memory (me once more) and long pockets (not me).

The T3 Lajoie no offer went for a tasty number.

I was surprised by what the Radbourn flipping the bird N172 went for. Here is the N173 version:

This one totally blows my mind. Never have I seen prices like this for relatively “common” mellos.

Nice N173 Jay. I was an early underbidder in the Bird Flip card. I had no idea it what it was worth and barely fit into the equation!

$9600 total for 3 common mello mints has to be a world record. I would have thought the final with hammer would have only been the BP of the equation (1600).

Personally, I would have gone after them if they stayed down in the $1600 range. I expected them to go somewhere in the $2800-$3200 range since they were extremely nice looking for mello mints.

T206Collector 11-01-2017 08:33 AM

Something about the phrase “mello mint” has always intrigued me - sort of relaxed me. Never even considered acquiring one, but I could see a fascination with the brand that would cause a bidding war on some nice looking examples.

ullmandds 11-01-2017 08:35 AM

mellomints have quite possible the coolest backs in the bizness!!!!

barrysloate 11-01-2017 09:38 AM

The high bids on the Mello Mints are almost certainly the result of just two bidders going back and forth. Therefore, it may not be an accurate indicator of what the cards are really worth.

Amen to that. I have 40 of the set of 50 and not even some of the top Cards in the set would reach those numbers if I were to sell.

That one made me scratch my head too. I was looking to upgrade my Berry but around $2000 including the vig was a bit much. I bought several of the D310s because it is just tough to find 310s in great shape and I thought the prices were decent.

The only two I didn't need were the Berry and the Sutor. I picked up the Chadbourne and the Murray. Besides Berry, Heister went for $960, Mohler went for $1560, LaLonge went for $720, Vitt went for $600, and Lewis went for $600. I know these are most highest graded, Berry is a great classic pose, and Mohler is a popular player, but still, there were a bunch of low end D310s on e-bay that the seller could barely sell (I think he still has four listed). The two I bought were also highest graded, and Chadbourne is one of only two graded (I was shocked to see it, let alone win it). I don't put a lot of stock in the pop reports on these, I am pretty sure most collectors don't have them graded (the ones I have graded I bought that way). I love this set, I'm up to 44 different, but I was starting to think there are only two or three guys collecting this set besides me. Hopefully this signals a resurgence of this set!
