Ruth, all day and every day. regardless of future projected value or wtvr.

quinnsryche 07-30-2016 09:08 PM

I'd rather have the cash! :) I can't imagine spending $25K on ANY card.

Joshwesley 07-30-2016 09:14 PM

The Ruth 10-10 times...

Way too many 88 Jordan stickers and rookies for that matter.

Jordan's will always have value.. But the Ruth is iconic and could be one of those cards that makes the meteoric jump in the coming years.

Having said that..... I'll take the 25k in cash!

Gobucsmagic74 07-30-2016 09:17 PM

How is that Jordan a PSA 10 with that centering?

brianp-beme 07-31-2016 01:05 AM

A vote for externalizing items normally found within the mouth

The Jordan, as Ruth is not showing any tongue.

Brian

yanksfan09 07-31-2016 05:06 AM

That's insane for a sticker, especially one years after any of his rookie cards. If I wasn't considering value of the sticker to resell for other cards, I'd rather have a grade 1 goudey ruth than the sticker any day of the week!

philliesfan 07-31-2016 07:08 AM

Not even a close. The Ruth all day long. Besides, how is that Jordan a 10 with that centering?

The fact that a grader gave that a 10 absolutely shows a PSA grading scale is garbage.

I would not pay more than a 35 bucks for that card personally outside that case and then feel hesitant as this Jordan bubble looks to me like a balloon racing into a razor warehouse. That someone paid 25k for a 10 on a plastic slab holding an 8 is madness.

Who are these people throwing money away on a junk wax sticker!? This was a sub 10 dollar card a year ago unslabbed, how can this be a logical use of one's money? I am just mind blown.

Ruth

brian1961 07-31-2016 06:50 PM

The money.

However, in the spirit of the question----The Babe. Beautiful card.

With the younger age of the new deep pocket big spender collectors however, most of them are going to gravitate to Michael Jordan, especially if they see other fellow young guns buying MJ. JMHO ---Brian Powell

Shoebox 07-31-2016 09:03 PM

I would rather have:

Ruth to own. The Jordan to sell.

SikSyko 07-31-2016 09:37 PM

The Ruth.

Is it just me or does the bottom left of the Jordan corner have a white "dot" on it?

MR RAREBACK 07-31-2016 10:40 PM

babe ruth

Joshchisox08 08-01-2016 09:26 AM

The $$$$$

That much money......... no offense but screw those cards.

2dueces 08-01-2016 03:40 PM

I love it when I have no idea my collection has increased 100 fold in value. First it was the Jordan rookie and sticker. Now an 88 sticker. I think I paid a couple hundred in 2000? 2001? Stupid prices but maybe its time to sell my Jordan collection.

Leon 08-04-2016 08:28 AM

Crazy stuff these days. I am going with the little sticker over a period and great looking Ruth.

I wouldn't bid on either. The Jordan's l/r centering would gnaw at me at that level, and so would the blurriness around Babe's cap, hands, and bat.

Good eye, bro. I never studied either card too closely at the time I responded, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty as you did, you made the right call. Save the boo coo for a gem that has nothing to come against you, and everything in its wake to keep a smile on your face.

Now to get that much boo coo to spend .... ---Brian Powell

The Jordan so I can stick it on my bathroom mirror!

As a collector of the pre-shine era, the Ruth is an easy choice. As to appreciation potential, I continue to believe it's a crapshoot.

Your last sentiment is so true. With what we have seen lately "anything is possible" is the only correct answer.

No "maybe" about it, Joe.

Best of luck on that,

Sometimes it can be good to take a little money off of the table, so to speak.

Why can't we have both?

Topps206 08-12-2016 10:44 PM

I'll take Ruth easily.

Perhaps that is true, Bob, but I am leery of dumping a large sum of money into any card with hundreds of thousands of raw examples that could easily erode its value with newly slabbed specimens...and you know that this result will spawn a rush of submittals to PSA of the 1988 stickers. The Ruth is a classic card from a classic set that is not likely to see a pop increase.

Personally, I'd not buy either card. I've always believed in buying rarity, not slabs. The Jordan is common; the Ruth is tougher but still a widely available mainstream card. I'd rather have a nice midgrade Ruth that presents well and spend the other $20,000+ on other cards.

Odd

Odd that members of a pre-WW2 baseball card message board would chose a pre-WW2 baseball card over a post-WW2 basketball card...

Would you guys prefer a Baltimore News Ruth or a comparably valued copy of Superman #1?😐

RTK 08-13-2016 07:57 PM

Most definitely Ruth

The point of this thread was not really to poll the board for their preference, but to point out something ridiculous.

ullmandds 08-14-2016 07:28 AM

Dunno about you guys...but I'd much rather have one of the highest graded gretzky rookie cards as opposed to collector graded cards of the following:

t206 plank
run of practically every period ruth card ever made
mantle rookies(both)
gehrig rookie
ramly wajo
cj cobb
t206 hof run
cj hof run(14 and 15)
shall I keep going?

Sounds like Pete should move to Canada and search for a Hockey Card forum :)

This isn't a really good comparison. You are asking about classic items from their respective hobbies. The OP was comparing a high population item from the modern era of the same hobby with a classic card in the same hobby.

A better comparison would be a Low Grade 1939 Superman #2 or a High Grade 2003 Walking Dead #1. They go for about the same price and compare two separate eras of the same hobby. FWIW I would take the #2 Superman. :D
