1906 Sporting Life Detroit Postcard

I was hoping this might fly under the radar. It didn't. Congrats to the winner...

I would say the price was fair for the condition that it was in. The seller also had the Boston (AL) postcard w/Cy Young as well. Of course, the Cobb rookie year was the highlight of the pair......

"Coming Champs 1908. Mark my word."

Spoken like a true fan.
FWIW they lost to the Cubs again in 1908.

calvindog 03-01-2015 12:20 PM

I actually think this went for a pretty high price; the card is as beat up as one can be -- but it is arguably the earliest Cobb card and still very rare.

Bicem 03-01-2015 01:18 PM

Under-bidder.

Thought the price was reasonable, I don't value condition much though.

Baseball Rarities 03-01-2015 03:51 PM

I won it. It certainly has its condition problems, but collectors seem to be a little more lenient with postcards. AFAIK it is Cobb's first "card" and from my count, only a half dozen or so are out there.

Congrats Kevin.

Congrats kevin! To me the condition doesn't matter that much for such an important card. Nice early image of Cobby. Congrats again.

This is the first one I've ever seen on ebay and will surely be the last. I'm actually stunned it didn't end up at an auction house. Obviously the seller had not a clue with what he had.

Jeff, out of curiosity what do you think it would have brought at an AH??

No, he had no clue. He thought that the Boston AL PC would sell for more than the Detroit.

More, for sure. It's such an incredibly rare and desired card due to the first Cobb appearance on a 'card.' And I believe this is the third one in the past five years which I've seen for sale at an auction either raw or graded. Kevin can confirm this. As for the price, this card wasn't in the right place and it was obviously mislabeled. I was surprised it went as high as it did solely because I didn't think so many people who knew what it was bid on it. I don't know how you guys never seem to miss a card no matter where it is misplaced.

Baseball Rarities 03-01-2015 08:32 PM

I thought that the PC was worth $3k or so.

This is the third example that I remember being sold individually in the past 10 years. SCP had a PSA Authentic example and Legendary had a raw example. Both examples were extremely nice and appeared to be in the EX to EX/MT range.

Bicem 03-01-2015 08:37 PM

I was thinking $3k too slabbed and in an AH. Was buying for resale so didn't want to go any higher.

I also sold a mid-grade one with my complete set in Goodwin a few years ago.

bcbgcbrcb 03-02-2015 04:30 AM

Glad that you won it, Kevin. Congrats!

I owned one of these at one time in nice condition, traded it for a W601 Detroit premium from 1905 plus some cash, amounted to a total of about $3,500 by my count.

rainier2004 03-02-2015 07:29 AM

What an amazing pickup...beautiful.

Bicem 03-02-2015 07:46 AM

That was the one I sold Phil.

BeanTown 03-02-2015 08:24 AM

I think it was a great buy. Wish I had found it or at least bid on it. This card would fetch 4-5k going through a AH with a big mailing list. I might in the minority for this statement.. I would rather own a post card with a cancelled stamp on the back and writing, than a clean back. Who needs to get it graded when it has all that. There are some other Cobb 1906 postcards out there which were done as advertisments by local companies. Probally about the same population on them.

Bicem 03-02-2015 11:58 AM

Do you have examples of these others from 1906?

Steel Tubes earliest postmark was 1907 if that's the one you're referring to.

Im thinking of a laundry card of the entire team. I bought one years ago from Brian D at National. He is from Michigan and always turns up cool and unusual things.

pawpawdiv9 03-02-2015 02:26 PM

Heres a old thread: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...=143006&page=4

But also found some other oddballs 1907-09

Have a pic?

h2oya311 03-02-2015 09:53 PM

yes, please. I'd love to also see another Cobb from 1906!

I threw in a healthy snipe but got blown away. Kevin - congrats! I actually haven't seen one for auction in quite a few years. I seem to recall there being a website with all of the W601 postcards EXCEPT the Tigers pc, so I figured it was pretty rare.

Bicem 03-02-2015 09:59 PM

That site belonged to our own Mr. Steve Murray, was his white whale for a long time.

Steve actually sold me my first postcard. Damn you Steve!

3k-4k in a well publicized auction would have been my guess...but I wasn't too sure so my snipe was much lower. If I needed it for my collection it would have been a whole "nuther" story :)

Bringing this thread back, wondering if this card ever made it to a well publicized auction? I remember there was one of these rarities that went off at REA.

I sold it privately.
