Derek:

Affordable used to mean $10K. Nowadays mid 5-figures. I'm still looking for one of those as well.

I used to have 2 M101-1's at different times as well as an 1896 Paterson team photo button issued by Whitehead & Hoag.

I paid $82.5k for my M101–1 graded BVG 2.5. I think it’s a $250k item in the future as the collecting/investing community continues to accept supplements as potential rookie pieces or “cards”. And, if/when PSA slabs these, look out. See what’s happened to M101-2 since PSA started slabbing them

Michael, that is a great piece

According to PSA's Pop Report they have graded 1 M101-1. I think a Delehanty graded A. I sent PSA an email a week ago asking if they still grade M101-1 and haven't heard back. Are we as a group sure they are NOT grading M101-1?

Not 100% sure but I believe they don’t fit inside their largest holder. The Delahanty was probably trimmed down to where it would fit, hence the “A” grade.

At that price point for the M101-1, I might have instead opted for the National Copper Plate that’s potentially a year older and has been sitting on eBay for years now. Listed for $75,000 as a BIN o/b/o. I would imagine that there is a good chance that $50K would do it. Looks very clean to me as well. I don’t know the seller personally but not sure how much faith I would have spending that kind of money there.

Not easy getting Washington into this thread, but I do have the Dutchman at the 1933 World Series.

You’re on a roll, adding that one to your trove? It’s a stunner for sure.

Phil - Why do you think that the National Copper Plate Wagner could potentially be a year older than the M101-1? The title states “Louisville, 1899” on it.

The M101-1 was definitely included with the August 19,1899 issue of The Sporting News.

You’re right, Kevin. I wasn’t looking at the NCP when I posted that so wasn’t aware that the date was printed on it. Memory isn’t as good as it used to be. :)

Nevertheless there are good reasons to think the NCP predates the Sporting News. Many of the NCP players were older stars left off the Sporting News issues (Anson and Ewing and Hoy, for example), with dates in 1898 on many of them. And some of the differences make it even more clear, such as RJ Wallace’s two cards, with different teams and dates. That said, it seems like the NCP was completed as 1899 rolled on, perhaps, since it contains some unique 1898 issues but also several 1899 cards that look identical in picture and wording to the Sporting News issues of the same players. It’s possible the Wagners were closely or simultaneously issued, but it seems extremely unlikely the Sporting News was issued first. Kevin may have more info.
