Larrupin' Lou....

1 Attachment(s)
Show a Lou card if you would like to...and if it's Larrupin' Lou, all the better. This is a photo card, as I call it, from 1929....from our BST not too long ago...

and from our Wiki friends...

Henry Louis "Lou" or "Buster"[1] Gehrig (June 19, 1903 – June 2, 1941) was an American baseball first baseman who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees (1923–1939). Gehrig was renowned for his prowess as a hitter and for his durability, a trait which earned him his nickname "The Iron Horse". He finished with a career batting average of .340, an on-base percentage of .447, and a slugging percentage of .632, and he tallied 493 home runs and 1,995 runs batted in (RBIs). A seven-time All-Star[2] and six-time World Series champion, Gehrig won the Triple Crown in 1934[3] and was twice named the American League's (AL) Most Valuable Player. Gehrig was the first MLB player to have his uniform number retired, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.
A native of New York City and attendee of Columbia University, Gehrig signed with the Yankees in 1923. He set several major league records during his career,[4] including the most career grand slams (23) (since broken)[5] and most consecutive games played (2,130), a record that stood for 56 years and was long considered unbreakable until surpassed by Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1995.[6] Gehrig's streak ended in 1939 after he was stricken with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disorder now commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease in North America,[7] which forced him to retire at age 36 and claimed his life two years later. The pathos of his farewell from baseball was capped off by his iconic "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech at the original Yankee Stadium.

That's a great pose of Lou with the car, Leon. I like how he's still wearing his mitt, too.

My favorite player of all. The numbers. The grace. The sportsmanship. The class. He was everything a professional athlete should be. Everything a role model should be. In today's age, Lou Gehrig should be more relevant than ever.

Thanks Pete...I've been looking for a while around that grade and most are munched...I didn't mind the paper loss in trade for the overall card. I know everyone has their "thing" when it comes to defects and I prefer anything over a crease. I love centering as well, but will still trade that over a crease. Can't wait to see yours.

I love all the comments on Lou...having read his biography the man stood for everything that's right. First class all the way, a TRUE role model. Hard to find anyone that measures up in comparison...and looking at all these cool cards is just unreal.

Thanks Dean. Love the eye appeal on yours.

Here's the 1925 tint, not the '26. The TPGs haven't been on the ball labeling these, so the pop on the '25 is pretty low.

My '25?

I'm gonna circle back to SGC and see if they can judge if mine is a '25 or a '26. Every time I scan it looks different, maybe they can look at the batch of cards it came in with. Visually with the naked eye I don't see the blue but I can't quite get my scanner to duplicate perfectly it side by side. Would be kind of frustrating if it is a '26. This scan is the one that closest resembles the side by side (actual card to scan).

Edited to add the PSA scan before it crossed... can't see the blue in it either.

I adore the DeLong card.

Someone post the US Caramel!

Sadly for me, no Gehrig card to post, but had to comment on Leon's OP: Gehrig posing with a freaking Pontiac?? The ugly step-sister of a Chev? For arguably the second most popular athlete of that era, behind the Babe, it's a sacrilege that he is not posing with one of the grand marques of the time, such as a Deusey, Pierce Arrow, Packard, Auburn or Cord. Did he own a Pontiac dealership? Great pix, guys. I'm green with envy, esp. for Luke's DeLong. That's a blazer!

Sean1125 04-20-2014 12:48 PM

A couple more Gehrig's.

Great cards everyone, easiest way to tell if they are 1925 vs 26 exhibit is scan them in between two you know are from each year. The one above looks like a 1925 but a lot depends on the scan.

Here is a scan of both (not mine)
