1928 Fro Jo Ruths

See a bunch of these popping up for sale lately. Realize there are a lot of fakes and that SGC won't even grade them anymore. Would anyone have qualms about buying a Beckett graded one? Prices almost seem too low on what I've seen.

Fro Joys have been on my "do not buy" list for some time. I read an article once that alleged that there are actually more fakes out there than authentics. Turned me off completely.
As for trusting Beckett, I stopped trusting them after they assured 13 year-old me that Todd Van Popple would be the next Nolan Ryan. I probably have 100 Van Popple rookies in my parent's house somewhere. Beckett is not to be trusted.

thats funny Orlando! personally I find fro joys to be some of the least expensive period ruths available...and with some practice you should be able to tell real from fake...although I def agree there are more fakes than real out there.

I'd hoard them!!!!

Leon 03-07-2017 04:59 PM

I don't think they would holder them if they weren't sure. I am sending some to them soon to be graded.

I have 2 graded by becket, both are real. Just bought another graded by becket, im hoping its real too, lol. 3 more to go for the set! :D

If SGC says we are no longer confident that we can determine real ones from fakes, not sure how much confidence one should have in any of the other grading companies. Maybe others see it differently.

drcy 03-07-2017 08:23 PM

I assume the Beckett ones are fine.

So funny because it's true.

I had the same concerns and sold off my Ruth Fro Joys last year. Even when I felt I knew what I was looking at I always had doubts lingering.

When I see a graded 1928 Ruth card show up on eBay with a $99.00 BIN I have to wonder.

If anyone can point me to another graded Ruth card from the peak of his career going to less than $100 please do. I'd be interested in buying it.

You are mistaking if you think those grip cards aren't real. They are but who wants a card of a hand grip? Education/experience is the key here. I almost pulled the trigger on the others but already have some and the prices aren't that low for the conditions. (no grip cards please)

One of the amusing side-bars to the set is card number #1 (I think) of Ruth sitting down in the dugout. The photographer politely asks if Ruth wouldn't mind taking his gum out during the shoot. The Babe, always obliging, parks it on top of his cap where it can be clearly seen in the photo. Great stuff.

These help in your learning, although they're tougher to find than Ruth (no longer own some of the Tunney's).

As had been said, get a Tunney for comparison as that card hasn't been reprinted and forged as the Ruth.

A double +1 on the above!

I bought a set of them years ago after I'd spent a good deal of time studying the Tunney cards. I was able to compare them side by side and I am 100% confident that I had genuine cards. BVG slabbed them for me at a National quite some time ago. I've sold them off over the years except for one I kept for my collection, the gum-hat one.

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...Ruth%201_1.jpg

I've handled enough genuine Tunney cards that I would be fine buying a Ruth but it would have to be raw so I could make the determination myself.
