19 3/4" tall

Went to the Hillsborough Antique Show yesterday…picked up this Penfold Golf Balls advertising display…had my eye out for one for decades…I think this may be the first one I’ve seen for sale in person…wasn’t expecting to find one of these when I went in…Not sure on the exact year...I think they started making them in the 1930's...this one looks maybe 1940ish...

Most of the ones I see on line seem to have some restoration…this one seems to be in pretty good original condition…The most obvious wear is on the wood base…Although worn, the pipe looks like it may be original…There is about a 2” mar on top the hat…So basically only needs those areas restored…but looks pretty good with my other golf stuff till I get around to it

Nice Carlton! I saw one of these recently at a show in Calgary but didn't ask to look at it closely (it was at the top and back of a dealer's table set up). May I ask what a fair price is for one in decent shape? Thanks!

Always admired that piece as well. A real eye-catcher, and fits in beautifully with your Golf Display.

I would hold off on restoring it. It is all-original, and really not that bad, given the fragility. Looks wonderful as-is. Congrats on another fine addition to your collection.

very neat

I like 3 dimensional advertising. It always seems so substantive - one can bring themselves right there to the moment it might have been encountered in the day. It's beyond what one experiences when looking at a card or picture.
No way I would touch any part of it - I think showing some signs of age are requisite to my enjoyment of an old piece like that. Not to say I wouldn't want something in the best condition possible for the money, it's just that I wouldn't artificially enhance something that wasn't degrading or aesthetically unpleasing which is obviously a personal call. Others often have other ideas about what looks good to them and that's the right of ownership.
Congratulations on another interesting addition. Love that you continue to post your travels and acquisitions. What do I owe you for hunting stuff vicariously through your posts? Really miss beating the bushes a bit but my area of Florida not the hunter's field of dreams........

Pretty much how I dress when I hit the links.

Great piece. I love the eclectic nature of your collection.

Nice pickup. Vintage golf advertising is hard to find. I would leave as-is.

Thanks all for the kind words…Yeah when I went to that show I really didn’t plan to spend as much as I did on it so your collective zeal helps take away the sting…See above I repositioned it to the back in the line-up so as to keep that pipe safer…less chance of it getting bumped….plus added a few more golf things in the fray…that “Par” after shave powder tin is the best condition tin I have, mint…and which goes with the Par shaving lotion sign….picked up that tin at a cowboy antique show five years ago…see link below, 8th post down.

Chris, I’m not really sure what the market value is…I shot the dealer an offer I figured I was safe at…and so what’s he go and do…reluctantly takes my offer!...But I knew it was a tough piece and I’d always wanted one…It’s one of those flashy pieces I used to see in the antiques journals but never owned…

1880, No charge for the excursions…my pleasure…glad you enjoy…Stay tuned for my 2013 National 8-Day Post-Con cross country road trip story…I’m getting close to finishing it…wait till you see John Gennantonio’s collection…phew!...it’ll be at the end and guaranteed to blow some socks off…
