Type card collecting 1910-1929
So, I'm setting a new goal of having one card from every year from 1910 - 1929. I'm looking to get a good representative set each year. Some are easy to identify, but other years might be tougher.
I think this might make for a cool display piece. I'll probably get common players only and in lower grades, but nonetheless... Anyone care to help out with suggestions for a set from each year? 1910 1911 1912 1913 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928 1929 |

Tough pacific coast tobacco type card expensive even in lower grade would be my suggestion for this year.

I assume you are wanting a major league card from each year, if you don't care then the Zeenut series (pacific coast eague) was produced every year from 1911 to 1938 and would certainly fill the list.
1910 - E96 Philadelphia Caramel 1911 - T205 Gold Border (or if you want to go larger T3's are beautiful cards) 1912 - T207 Brown Background 1913 - Voskamp's Coffee 1914 - E145-1 Cracker Jack 1915 - E106 American Caramel Co. (or the 1915 Cracker Jack set-but it looks like the 1914's so maybe the same player pictured w/ two different teams is a good option) 1916 - M101-5 or M101-4 1917 - E135 Collins-McCarthy/Boston Store/Weil Baking/etc. 1918 - Thin pickins for this year (you may have to settle for a Zeenut card--maybe of a former or future MLBer) 1919 - T213-3 Coupon Cigarettes 1920 - Holsum Bread (Type 1) 1921 - E121 American Caramel (Series of 80) 1922 - E120 American Caramel or E121 American Caramel (Series of 120) 1923 - V117 Maple Crispette or Exhibit Supply Co. 1924 - Diaz Cigarettes (Cuban issue of Major Leaguers w/ great portraits) 1925 - Exhibit Supply Co. 1926 - Spalding Champions or Exhibit Supply Co. 1927 - E126 American Caramel 1928 - W502 1929 - R315 |

Also, note on the 1924 Diaz Cigarettes that its interesting specialty is that only pitchers appear in the set with the possible exception of John W. Cooney, who also played different positions for Boston and other teams during his career. |
Mark, I assume you don't have a "Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards." I suggest that you obtain one and use its chronological index to see what card set choices are available to you for each of the years you are collecting. This Catalog will provide you with pictures of the cards plus estimated prices; although some of the prices shown are not in line with current market prices, the prices shown will at least give you a reasonable idea as to whether you are looking at a $50 price or a $500 price for a common player.

Even though you said you wanted to start with 1910, I would move it back to 1909. That was really the first year that baseball cards as such took off, and there were so many great sets that year from which to choose. Personally and while I don't collect them, I believe you must have a T206 in there, as it represents the most popular set in the hobby. I would probably choose a caramel set for 1909, either E90-1, E92 or E95, and then use T206 in the 1910 slot.
I also would go after many different types of distribution, so I would use the game card from 1913 and a color strip card from 1920 (I would pick W514 as more colorful and better drawn). I also think it important to have a minor league card, and Zeenut is worthy of inclusion in any hobby discussion, so 1918 or 1919 would work there. Those same years would also work for W-UNC Big Head strips and m101-6 Mendelsohn, although the latter is so much larger it might overpower any display. I would include a Federal League player from whichever Cracker Jack set you choose--I'd take 1915 and use the t222 for 1914. Diaz cigs in 1924 gives you a little more international flavor than having multiple Canadian sets. I would end with W560 for 1927, one of the ice cream sets for 1928 and R316 Kashin for 1929. Lots of good choices available--I'm sure you will enjoy your project! |
One thing I think I would want is to be sure that PSA slabs it with a year. I dont think they do with T206. Having the years on the tab would help for display purposes.
Price wise I would pay up to $100 for a good set card. That would keep the entire run at no more than 2k |
Yet another reason to use SGC :) Although they may not limit it to just one year with some sets.

I dont have a suggestion as I am pretty new at this but I love the idea. Keep us posted here on this link with maybe a pic of each card as you get them. I would love to follow the process and see where this takes you.

Leon, just admit you wanted to show me up with your cards with those pesky "coupons" attached at the bottom! :)
BTW Great collection, I still need a few of the surprisingly tough ones for my "with coupon" run. (not sure why 1920-22 are so difficult to find with coupon when the cards w/o from those years aren't impossible) |
You will find it difficult to include several HOFers at that price point.
