It's an uncorrected proof "advanced reading copy". I haven't read the original so I won't be able to comment on differences, but I would be glad to lend it to whoever it was that said it was their favorite vintage book.

--------------------------------------------
no disclaimer - temporarily taking responsibility for my actions

This means that it is very close to the final product, but there may be some interesting differences (to those who have read the final version). If you like Joyce and have read "Portrait of the Artist...", try the "uncorrected proof" and you will see a very different, yet very interesting book.

--------------------------------------------
no disclaimer - temporarily taking responsibility for my actions

Posted By: jeff
scott,

are you referring to "Stephen Hero" -- or another uncorrected proof before PoA? Stephen Hero has itself been sporadically in print for the last few decades because of its interest to Joyce scholars.

and, just to get this back on topic: compare 21st century publishing houses to 21st century card companies. the publishing houses offer virtually perfect copies of the book before publication as a courtesy. card companies, were they to use this idea, would probably make intentional mistakes on their "uncorrected proofs," then serial # them. I can just see it on eBay: "ICHIRO SPX Unc. Proof #/121 clr. var.!!!"
