Peek into your collection/thoughts of 2015

Hey guys so I was just looking at what I have completed this year in my collection and I have to say I am very happy with what I have done to date. Completed half of my 1934 Goudey set and learned a lot about some future things I plan to get involved in.

Anyway, I wanted to post this topic up about 2015. This year is coming to an end shortly and as some of us, we start to look to what next year will bring. My question to everyone is what are your plans for your collection as of now for 2015? Second question, what do people see for 2015 hot or not? What I mean is what sets or players will be hot or cold. Who will be the 1914 Cracker Jack of 2015.

I myself next year hope to compete my 34 Goudey set. Although it is getting very tough to because the bigger names are next on my list. Anyway, I plan on starting to pick up some of the T213 coupons. I have been reading and learning a lot about this set. Although it will be tough to find I do like the challenge.

As for what I think for next years hot or cold. As alway Ruth and mantle will continue to be hot. Don't really ever think they will stop. I hope to see some of the lesser name tobacco sets start to get the recognition they deserve. But besides that I have got no idea what will happen. Let's hear what you have to say.

swarmee 11-09-2014 07:37 AM

I will continue

buying mixed lots on eBay to fuel my personal collection of T51 Murad College Series, which I hope to complete in Master form. I have submitted an article to PSA's mag to try and inform more collectors about this great set, which could be a "next big thing"; it contains baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis, and hockey cards from a 1910 release, and many people collect items from their own college, presuming they're advertised properly.

I will also continue to look for low-grade Kimball's Champions to make a set on PSA as well. I have 2/3rds of a Hardie Henderson card, so that's my oldest baseball card in my collection (1887).

I will also look to increase my personal collection of Georgia Tech cards/autographs, attempting to build the top private collection of GT items, spanning sports and non-sports legends.

What's hot in 2015? Hmmm, Mecca double and triple folders. I think they're really neat, and are still reasonable for new collectors to latch onto.

BicycleSpokes 11-09-2014 09:56 AM

After collecting exclusively t206 for the past few years, I am going to take a break in 2015 and target other selected prewar and 1950s cards. Monster beware, I shall return...

kamikidEFFL 11-09-2014 01:42 PM

Wow leaving the t205 next year well taking a break. I can understand seeing the same type of card for two years nice to change things up. Best of luck next year

mattsey9 11-09-2014 02:10 PM

I'm planning to finish my T201 set. I've got 10 cards to go, and Cicotte is the only real non-common I need, so that should be doable with a little patience.

tonyo 11-09-2014 02:19 PM

For me, a lot can change in 7 weeks, but as of now I think my 2015 will look like this:

1. pick up a few of the big cards from my '48 thru '79 topps/bowman/leaf regular issue hof sub-set - I should have all of the easy ones by 2015.

2. continue to tweak my monster. Less common backs, Back stamps, unique marks, etc.

3. pick up a few more cards from my favorite sets in my pre-war type card set. I suspect some of the 30's sets will get my attention. Butter Cream, DeLong, tattoo orbit, Gge C Miller.

4. continue a modern card autograph set chase I've been working on a couple of years now.

5. may even break out my box of 80's cards to see what's in there :)

Sorry guys, I just couldn't resist. Tony, that is a bit too much personal info. Go ahead and "tweak" what you want, but keep it to yourself.:):):)

Vintage pirate pennants
HOFer cards
And continue with my 1909 Pirates.

Good stuff guys.

Hah!

At least it's my #2 priority next year!

You should start another "what's your monster number?" thread. :D

sandmountainslim 11-09-2014 03:21 PM

I have been picking up T206 only for the past couple years but I have been eyeing the handful of '33 Goudey cards I have and thinking of getting a few more.
My HEART wants more N172 to go with the one I lucked into and I have a self-styled "subset" I would love to work on but my bank account tells me that is out of reach.
Of course I plan to pick up another handful of T206 also.

brewing 11-09-2014 03:29 PM

My collecting goals for the next 14 months are.....

Complete the Bowman Tiger teams.

Complete the T205 Tiger team (need Cobb, Jennings, and 2 commons).

Complete the basic Topps issue of all HoFers that have a 1952 and later rookie card ( I'm real close to this, less than 10 left).

Add a 53 Topps Mays and 54 Bowman Williams to my collection.

kamikidEFFL 11-09-2014 04:45 PM

Wow some great things to come in 2015 looks like as of now. Later on will have to check back and see what's changed and such.

GoldenAge50s 11-09-2014 05:31 PM

"Tweaking your Monster" will make you go blind, so I've heard.

oldcardboard 11-09-2014 05:58 PM

Keep chipping away at my t206 HoF set,and "E" series HoFers.
Hunting season is open all year, best of luck to everyone.

steve_a 11-09-2014 06:05 PM

T202 & Wilson Franks will be my new focus.

EvilKing00 11-09-2014 06:32 PM

Ill continue to add to my t205 set, pick up as many ruths as i can, and hope to land a joe jackson strip card

What about twerking it?

x2drich2000 11-09-2014 08:47 PM

I'm planning to continue to focus on the e92 Nadja set. I highly doubt I'll be able pick up even a quarter of the number of cards I did this year, so hopefully by the second half of the year I'll have enough saved to grab a big HOFer like Mathewson or one of the Wagners. Anyone have a lead on a very low grade one? :D

I'm going to kick 2015 in the nuts starting in about February or March. Assuming I don't do something stupid again, I'll be able to really hit my collection hard for the first time. And I am really looking forward to it.

After picking up this little guy I will certainly be looking to advance the name at top collection. I sit at 132 different examples and hope to add at least 30 next year. Thanks to everyone that has helped me so far. This wouldn't be possible without Net54 and people willing to part with these beauties.

Thank you, Alex. ;) I have to admit, it's been incredibly difficult restraining myself, especially seeing all these great cards coming in. But it was necessary. I couldn't in good conscience spend a lot of money on baseball cards until I had my savings back to where I felt comfortable. I expect that by the end of January, or the end of February at the latest I'll have a full year's worth of bills and living expenses, plus my maximum out of pocket for my health insurance, set aside. Knowing that, I'll have no problem going after some of the bigger items on my want list. I'm keeping myself sane in the mean time making little purchases, mostly working on my 1975 set.

Doug-that Cy Young is unbelievable. Honestly, how many times a day are you looking at that thing?

kamikidEFFL 11-10-2014 08:18 PM

I agree with "Stache" how many times u look at that card. Love it

Great hearing from everyone. I've been very much enjoying set-building low grade 1954 Topps, usually by small lots, taking care to spend less than $2/card. My vintage mainstays used to simply be Lefty Grove and Eck, but 1954 Topps takes me back to the days when I used to read Archie comics.

Since my Modern card pursuits are largely finished (and I'm not a fan of chasing a gazillion parallels in later-year issues of my favorite players), this should tide me over for some time.

Holy Grail

The Cleveland list gets shorter and shorter. Top 2 on the wishlist are a Breisch-Williams and a Novelty Cutlery. Wish me luck.

Breisch-Williams

Holy Grails, indeed. Good luck, Chris!

jason.1969 11-11-2014 07:09 AM

2015 is the year I will add a Babe Ruth to my collection. Shooting for the 1933 Goudey with yellow bkgd. Anything beyond that is a distant second, though I am holding out hope I may find the June 18, 1959, Jet magazine with Henry Aaron cover.

Vintageismygame 11-11-2014 09:38 AM

I hope to finish my T206 Non-Hat Portrait set in 2015. I am only 17 away but all are either SL or HOF. :(

2015 goals

Not too specific, but I plan to work on displaying my stuff. It's time to get things out of boxes and on the walls. Then get my type card wantlist in order and keep my eyes open. Hopefully hit up a few more shows (Chicago National, maybe an east coast show or two).

Wow Doug, congrats! Got to hold that beauty at the National....dream card.

Sean 11-11-2014 12:50 PM

Hey Doug, so you're the one who got that split Young. Nice going. :)

MattyC 11-11-2014 12:54 PM

In 2015 I will continue hunting down exceptionally well-centered 1952 Topps Mantles. It's my favorite card and love the search for nice centering.

Beatles Guy 11-11-2014 12:55 PM

If I haven't gotten it already, I am going to seek out the final piece to my Cardinals team run (Topps & Bowman) from 1948-1985. That piece is the '48 Bowman Musial. It's hard to find that card nicely centered.

Besides that, pre-war type cards for my Cardinals collection.

darwinbulldog 11-11-2014 12:59 PM

I'll be looking to add a couple of new D-card types, a couple of new types from T213/T214/T215/T216 and a few more Polar Bears -- plus a couple of things I'm secretly collecting because I think they're undervalued.

A big +1 on the latter! Same with me: rare and significant (read HOF'ers) and not yet in the spotlight (demand has a way of eventually coming around to the first two factors). John J. Pittman did the same thing as a chemical engineer with Eastman Kodak (not even upper level management) in coins (he could never afford the true "trophy-level" coins that went for huge bucks) and amassed a collection over 5-6 decades that sold for $40 million after his death!

Best of luck,

Larry

Normally I have no plans, but I do for 2015. I didn't offer up many of my cabinet photos for sale this year, but plan to cull out my favorites and then put the rest up for sale. I might also keep some prints, but my collecting focus will be on 19th century mounted photos and tintypes.

What will be hot? That's easy - Old Judges and other mounted albumen tobacco sets. I say this because I might start collecting them again, so their prices will certainly shoot up during the period I am purchasing. I can also predict when the bottom will drop out.

Jason 11-11-2014 06:41 PM

I hope to finish off at least one other T210 Series and keep working on the others. Also to maybe complete my T209-2 Richmond team set. I dont think I can duplicate 2014's success but it will be fun trying!

Jason Carota 11-11-2014 07:40 PM

Took a fair amount of time off from collecting in 2014. Had to re-evaluate my focus, as I had far too many changes. I decided to go back to the Red Borders, as that set has always intrigued me. In 2015, I'm looking to slowly add to my current (small) crop of T210's, along with picking up a few favorite type cards along the way.

kamikidEFFL 11-15-2014 07:05 PM

Some really nice stuff people will be collecting next year. I can't wait.

9 Months later. I'm 2 Tiger 1953 Bowman B&W's from completion.

Completed the T205 Tiger team set.

Aborted the basic Topps issue of all HoFers. Sold about a dozen HoF rookie cards as part of the fund to acquire a 1952 #311.

Acquired the 53 Topps Mays (from Net54) and the 54 Bowman Williams.

It's mid year. How are you doing?

I am sort of lost :). Not knowing where the journey is taking me next but I have a feeling it will be type cards again!!

pokerplyr80 07-06-2015 12:14 PM

I hadn't responded to the original post, but My goals were to pick up a Goudey Ruth 144, 55 Clemente, 51 Bowman Mantle, and a 52 Topps Mantle. A green T206 Cobb is also high on the list.

I've got 3 out of the first 4. As you may have seen in a post of mine I'm still searching for the 52 Mantle. The Cobb will have to wait for now.

2016's goal will be a Joe Jackson card.

mrvster 07-06-2015 12:36 PM

Great pieces

everyone! doug I admire your focus:) sick m/c:eek:

my focus......whats hot also- T206 scrap, rare backs, oj's......the quest for wags on day:)

pawpawdiv9 07-06-2015 12:43 PM

2015
Pickup up several RC's for my collection.
Also, added a t206 Red Cobb (double name t/b) & a green Cobb ---didnt think i ever do some Cobbs or any pre-war, would of thought a Ruth Goudey been first for sure.

Still looking for a FanCraze Wagner & 25 Gehrig P/C
Sold Mantle collection (ecept 51b & 52)
Currently selling Football RC collection..so i can buy more baseball cards.

Rest of 2015-early 2016--- slow, very slow..might be heading towards pre-war like finishing the 4 Cobb run or adding a Ruth Goudey or just save for the unexpected when it pops.

clydepepper 07-06-2015 01:12 PM

Having cut my collection in half by selling my 1957-1980 topps sets, I am further 'culling' by selling off several T206 and other PSA-graded cards that do not hold my attention.

My recent focus has been high-grade Mantle & Koufax cards which will take the place of many of the cards I am parting with. I have only the '57, '58, '60, & '62 Mickeys to go.

There are also a few cards in Leon's auction that I hope to land.

The idea is to wind up with a 'tighter' collection with better sustained value.

This is all driven by the pessimist in me, preparing for my operation, but trying not to leave a lot for the family to 'clean up' should something 'bad' occur.

The proceeds will also help pay for the portion of the medical bills not covered by my high-priced, but at least available, health insurance.

Looks like I had just enough patience as I completed the set earlier this year. My pre-war focus has shifted to the 1934 Goudey set. I've now put together 28 of the 96 cards with The Meal Ticket being the newest card.

I love these types of threads as you really get to see there progress everyone is making with their collection. Personally, I've only added 1 e92 Nadja, Stone (green), which is probably the 2nd easiest card in the seat. I've also picked up an e92 Kleinow with a menagerie back to compliment the Nadjas and an e93 Plank (now just need to find a decent looking lower grade Cobb to complete the set).
