What are you collecting?
Not sure if this sort of thread has made the rounds lately but figured it couldn't hurt to ask- do you collect by set? Team? Player? Backs? Error? Era? Other theme?
My primary focus is a type set of Highlanders/Yankees cards across the whole spectrum (T, E, D, M. etc) I'm trying to acquire at least one from every set I like. My secondary focus is minor league players from tough issues- especially stuff like a T211 example of a Southern League player who has a T206 card. Because my field is so deep, I'm trying to go after the stuff I really love even if it means I have to go for some periods of time in between pick-ups. As easy as it would be to buy, say, a 1977 Topps Reggie Jackson or 1952 Bowman Casey Stengel in fits of desperation, I'm trying to preserve funds so I don't have to compromise quality on the stuff I love most, which is pretty much everything between 1909-1916. |

What am I collecting? Type cards of course!! There is always something new (but old) just around the corner. Every single day I might find cards I can't live without :). Graham was PCL President in 1910-11 and was subsequently Judge Thomas F. Graham.

These types of threads are always enjoyable, entertaining and they help you gain connections which are always good!
Currently I'm collecting T205s, T209 Photo Series and D322 Tip Top Bread. I'm also researching/looking for another set to start in on. Something that is relatively small in set size and are b/w prints or photos. E253 and R310 Butter Fingers are possibilities. |
HOF Autographed "rookie" cards, or earliest known signed card of a player, and pre-war.

I have my collecting focused about 90 percent on the T210 series with an occasional T209 or other Virginia League related card I can afford.I would love to run across an Old Mill Cabinet one day and start a mini set of those.

1. t206 519/520 upgrading my poor cards to fair or better.
2. t207 subset: recruit, non portraits. 3. 33 Goudey set in good/vg 4. prewar type set: shooting for 100 different types T3 size and smaller only, prefer a thicker stock than paper, (although I'm flexible there) trying for minimum 2 examples of each hofer, although I'd be happy with one of some of the tougher ones like Wagner! 5. thinking about an e90-1 subset, but the jury is still out on that... 6. 3 post war projects. |

I continue to do type collecting,1900-1939.
I also have been collecting original photos and oils. I'm happy to get one example from the key photographers and artists but at times i've been fortunate enough to pick up additional favorites. Thus far, I have 4 Conlon's; 2 Bain's; 1 Van Oeyen; 1 Thompson; 4 Burke's, 1 Brace; 1 Stein; 1 Dorrill: 1 Wingfield; 1 Emmons; 1 Houle. I also collect vintage packs, mostly T206 era. all the best, barry |
I am also a "team" collector...mainly...
My focus is Boston Red Sox (American) cards from all catalogued sets (except I have not branched out into Exhibits or postcards). Beyond that, I like E92s and certain other E-sets. I also like certain HOF players who were not with Boston (Rube Waddell, Sam Crawford, Chief Bender, etc.) And I also like certain scarce cards like T216, so will pick up HOF examples of those from time to time. My main focus right now is to complete a T206 back run of George Gibson. Last go 'round (6-7 years ago?) I got to within a Hindu. This time around, I have the Hindu and need only a P350 and Old Mill.
Since I am close to completion, I am pondering what comes next. It's between collecting something with a 1909 Pirates theme, or just sticking with Gibson cards. Regards, Richard. |

-Colgan's Chips (all sets) -All "E121-like" sets (E121, W575-1, Gassler's, Holsum, Haffner's, Standard Biscuit, Gertenrich, etc, etc) -Zeenuts (all years--this is admittedly a "lifetime" pursuit) -Non-sports type sets & many T-card (and other) complete series |
After finishing a 518/518 T206 set, I've been sort of bumping along not sure of what to pursue.
I am working on a T206 Hindu Southern League subset and kinda sorta started a HOF set. Tried getting into '34 Goudeys, but couldn't. Thought about T210 Series 2, but I have a friend working on that so I didn't want to drive up prices for him. Picked up a couple of OJs, e98s, 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s cards and rookies. Picked up a few autographed rookies and balls. And I seem to have grown fond of picking up boxes upon boxes of 80s/90s wax boxes. So as you can see, I'm a little all over the place. A few things I'm considering: N162s, N28s, N300s, e98s (or other caramel card), T207s. |
Currently working on the T210 set, D311 Pacific Coast Biscuit set, E97 black and white proof set and as always any nice caramel card (E94-E99) I can get my hands on.

Catcher poses
Started collecting 7 MLB catchers to get type cards: Roger Bresnahan, George Gibson, Red Kleinow, John Kling, Chief Meyers, Gabby Street, and Ira Thomas. Have most of the types I'm interested in for these players now. Still purchase Chief Meyers S74 colored silks whenever possible.
Then I focused on catcher pose cards in the 1909-1911 Obak sets, 1911-1912 Zeenut sets, and 1912 Home Run Kisses sets. Need only a few more from each set. Also picked up most of the B-18 White Infield catchers when the type cards came to a hault. Now looking to add C46 Imperial Tobacco catchers, and some T210 Old Mill catchers. Top of my wantlist: Munson Old Mill Cabinet, Johnny Kling Plow Tobacco card, and Carl Horner Cabinet of one of the 7 MLB catchers. Patrick |

Have been a high grade type card collector since 1977
Still working on a high grade G&B, T 209 4 color and a T208 Have over 150 different type cards and 50 different post card types. Narrowing scope of the collection. Now focusing only on pre-war but rare regionals from the 50's and early 60s In addition to cards collect advertising pieces, rare books, early programs and have a major Negro League collection. The same story is true with coins, 1857 is the key date, the one large cent I decided to purchase graded. After seeing others post of coins maybe my BST ads should include "will trade cards for coins" I guess many of us have the collecting disease in more then one area. |
I collect old cards of Jewish players. And I really just need two more: a Zeenut Danning and a Zeenut Cohen.
I also collect the 1911 Obaks (t212's). I've got fifty of them, including Weaver, Peckingpaugh, Million, Miller, Cooney, and Mensor. But it's hard to work on this set because I just don't run across them frequently. I see some on ebay, but they are generally just the same over-priced Buy-It-Nows. I have a hundred fifty t205's (including the HOFers), and a hundred fifteen t206's (including twenty-two HOFers). Even though there are cards available in these sets, I don't buy too frequently because I want to be ready to pounce when I finally run across Mr. Danning or Mr. Cohen. Previously, I assembled the Diamond Stars, the 1948 Bowmans (year I was born), the 1953 Topps, and 1953 color Bowmans. And I regularly enjoy thumbing through a box of cards. |
coins
Very interesting to see coins. I have to admit that during my hiatus from cards, I briefly dabbled in Civil War tokens. If you don't know what they are, you should check them out- very cool stuff. (Anyone interested in learning more is welcome to get in touch with me anytime). The concerns I have about cards losing value/popularity which I expressed in the "biggest changes in the past 5 years" thread rings true with coins as well- especially more esoteric stuff like tokens. There was a time that I wanted to start a forum like this for token collectors, but it's a niche in a niche in a niche and never got off the ground. Regardless, very interesting to see coins when I thought I was finally rid of them...

I have started many sets over the years and always lost interest. I now am more of a type collector. I identify the card in each set I like the most and work towards purchasing that card in a reasonable condition. ex. E95 Cobb, T205 Matty, 1915 CJ Speaker, etc. My goal is to one day try and complete a bigger vintage set (T206, E90-1, 1933 Goudey).

I've been keeping a spread sheet of those I don't have but are known to exist, and even better, those I know the owners of. That list is now at 32, with one coming off next week (hopefully). |

For me, 1948 Leaf baseball has been the most enjoyable. Especially the Short Prints. When you find a well registered centered example, then my friends you have a "keeper"!

Prewar Hall of Famers is what I like...and more.
I started by just wanting a nice card of each of the HOF players during their playing years, whose career was primarily post 1900. I finished that several years ago, started picking up a few 19th century guys (not many) and turned to multiple cards of a few favorites like Eddie Collins , Eddie Plank, Nap Lajoie, Lefty Grove and Sam Crawford. That quickly migrated into finding small sets with high concentrations of HOF players like E95 and York Caramels. That was while finishing my T205 set and trying to complete the Topps run from 53-80. Have a type set collection going too, but have traded/sold a few of those. I like C46 , most caramel sets and have a few Bowman sets started. Oh and plenty of Mike Schmidt, Dan Marino and Steve Yzerman cards and my 14 sets of 1971 Topps football... Now its even crazier...I want ALL the HOF cards from all the (reasonable) ACC sets 1904 to 1950. There are *many* exceptions that I allow myself so I can say I am on track... (not looking for t206 Wagner, Plank, no 1 of 1's or other super rare, ain't gonna happen sets, no postcards etc.) This collection is probably not going to ever finish, but that's ok...I've finally got a goal:p |
I change my focus frequently and collect almost anything that catches my eye.. and can afford, but lately I've been collecting Mel Ott items, mostly oddball items, especially his Diamond Matchbooks.

Pre and Post War type cards (though that's slowed down quite a bit...), and Exhibit Cards of HOF's and SP's... also gotten back a little into memorabilia like ad pieces and displays... also into baseball paperback books.
