I read somewhere where these bakelite pins were given out to women at Ladies Nights. Have no proof and don't remember the source. Anyone else heard this?

Here's a Forbes Field "Ladies day" sign

Every time I see the title of this thread I say to myself "oh what a night". It is quite subconscious.

Kool Forbes "Ladies Day" sign.
@Leon - Kool and the Gang can be quite catchy. Check out this awesome commercial about 'Baseball Optimism', with a Kool and the Gang song. http://www.mister-baseball.com/baseb...st-commercial/ |

I never gave it any thought. Apparently, Formula 409 can be used for a quick and reliable test. |

The man who came up with Ladies' Day was a former MLB player himself, Abner Powell. He played for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles from 1884-86. He also came up with the idea for the rain check and the infield tarp. A pretty innovative man. Here's a run-down of those accomplishments in his own hand:

Not exactly on point, but certainly on the subject...

I was away for 5 days for the Holidays, and always nice to come home to a package from a purchase last week.
I took a chance last week on a Cornell scrapbook that didn't show any sports items in the pictures, but the ebay listing description mentioned "some sports programs". Turned out to be a great find, and one of the more exciting recent pick ups I have had. The scrap book belonged to Mary B. Finch, '28. Mary attended Cornell from 1924-1928 and the scrapbook chronicles her days in '24 and '25. In addition to being heavily involved in music, theater, and the social scene - Mary was an avid athlete. The book details her involvement in Intra-class/intramural Baseball, Hockey, Tennis and Basketball. Mary collected some programs and other sports ephemera too. A highlight is a great photo, by JP Troy (who I collect), of her Freshman Baseball team, and two game action photos. Here is a link to some of the other sports items found in the scrapbook: https://goo.gl/photos/vccWzqRbaHbjjE387 Attachment 262782 |
