Read it and weep

I've been sorting, indexing and browsing through some of my older hobby publications this week, and tonight I found this ad in the July 15, 1978, issue of Sports Collectors Digest:

we can buy t206's for that price now.... however they aren't real =)

I am weeping believe me. I remember in 1989 a guy advertising very good commons for $4. I sent my want lists and got two.chick gandils that were probably 4s.

early 80's I remember going through plastic page after page of VG/EX T206 cards for $3-$5 ea. at shows.... All kinds of back..... a ton of Hindu (both colors), EPDG, Cycle, Tolstoi, American Beauty, Sovereign, Old Mill, and even a few Lenox, Broadleaf, and Carolina Brights, mixed in...... but the ones I always grabbed was the Polar Bear's.

Wish I knew that someday Red Hindu, Lenox, etc. etc would be thought of as scarce and command a big premium. :(

I liked the Polar Bear's when I was a kid ....... dang!

PS. My first T206 card was a Bob Unglaub, loved his name :)

There is no expiration date or "while supplies last" statement printed on that ad. I would send the money in. They HAVE to honor your purchase!

the 5 for $3 deal would be $10 in today's dollars when accounting for inflation. I wasn't even born yet, but wow.

Barry,

My neighbor has an X19 that he is restroing currently. In '79 I drove the British version of the wedge, the TR7 convertible.

Old Prices

I love these old adds. I like to look at the ones in old comic books, where you could buy key books back in the 70's for less than $15, that now go for $1000's. Same with cards. I think 1st time I remember seeing HOFers for sale around $12-$14 range. I should have jumped on them, for a few hundred dollars, I would have had the monster tamed by now...

This reminds me of a dealer I recently got to know. He pulls out a sheet of paper from an autograph signing in 1996 he had, Jeter and ARod each $15.
