Who are the 70...

Major Leaguers who served in wartime that are being honored via the USS Cooperstown?

My googling skills, evidently, are not up to this particular search.

Thanks

I count 72 on the list, and since the list is also for those who served during wartime, which I believe are the individuals being honored, who are the two veterans left out?

Thanks Brian - I knew someone who knew.

Your list has 72 names...wonder which 2 aren't included...

Just what I was wondering when I went back through and edited my second post.

Though not a hall of famer, I think Larry French is interesting. He was a good pitcher, though probalby pretty much done by the time he was called into service in 1942. He became a career sailor and saw action in WWII and Korea.

I figured it out when checking out the list closer. Both Larry McPhail and Ted Williams served during two separate wars, so they are on the list twice.

Brian, I think that Hank Bauer served in the Marine Corps during WWII. He fought on Iwo Jima and, I believe, was wounded.

As a youngster I saw Hank Bauer play numerous times. My favorite place to sit was in the lower right field grandstands so I had a ringside seat to his, and later Maris's, office in Yankee Stadium's starboard garden. Just gotta close my eyes and I can see him out there plain as day. Wonderful memories.

As best as I can tell Bauer was not on Iwo Jima but he had a hell of a war record, fighting in the Guadalcanal campaign, Guam and Okinawa. https://www.baseballinwartime.com/pl...bauer_hank.htm
The portrait was taken in 1942. I just won the locker room photo from RMY the other day. It was taken at spring training in 1950. Bauer is easy to spot.

amazing list of players and amazing sacrifices they made
think what some could have done in those playing years to their final stats

"the only professional baseball player to serve in Vietnam after having played at the major-league level"

Hopefully, the requirement isn't being a Hall of Famer? Why? Eddie Grant. Good player who was killed in action in WWI.
