Southern California Vintage Card and Collectibles Meetup

Hi Guys,

Hat tip for Ryan on creating a wonderful idea on hosting an East Coast vintage collectibles meetup. If you are a serious card collector on the Eastern Seaboard, please check out:

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...=252375&page=2

That said, wanted to gauge interest in a Southern California meetup. I did get several PMs of interest in the Los Angeles area, so this does seem to have traction for us SoCal people. To be upfront, it will be hard for me to spearhead this, as I have just finished work right now to write this, but I will do my best.

Was wondering if anyone is interested if they can provide the following:
1) Where do you live and where are you willing to drive to
2) What cards/memorabilia you collect and would like to see
3) If you will be willing to participate in co-managing the meetups
4) Any interesting ideas that would help promote activity in this meetup.

This list is by no mean complete, just a starter if you will. I will start:

I live in Rancho Palos Verdes. No one knows where it is; its where the 110S ends. I use to collect everything from 1800's to modern and collected with my father since the 1980 (and yes I have cases junk cards). In 2017, I moved from Pasadena to RPV and sold the majority of my cards during my move.

I have just got back into the hobby after getting the bug and now just focusing on graded pre-war cards (ie. 1st 5 HOF, Gehrig and Williams) and a couple "greatest hits" of the post-war like Aaron and Mantle. As I am rebuilding, my collection is still small so I don't have a collection ready yet for trade. But would hope to have one day, as I am building my doubles in a couple cards. Would love to see pre-war stuff. At this point I'm mainly into cards, but also have a few memorabilia items left to share.

Since I'm starting this thread, I guess I will be co-managing by default. But would really appreciate help.

PS. I don't mind hosting, but its not really convenient driving up my hill. I think once we get a sense of where those people are interested in driving to, I think we will get a better idea on venue.

Joshua

DeanH3 03-13-2018 12:28 AM

Good luck Joshua. I hope you're successful. Sounds like fun. Wish I were closer, I'd love to participate.

Griffins 03-13-2018 12:35 AM

I'm in. And I could possibly host. I'm in the West LA/Culver City area. I collect sets from KBats to '18 Heritage.

oldjudge 03-13-2018 02:03 AM

Joshua-Thanks for putting this thread together. I'm in. I'm mainly interested in pre-1900 photographic cards. I know where RPV is-we've stayed at the Terranea.

rdwyer 03-13-2018 09:20 AM

Anaheim, Ca. T205, & T206. Would co-manage. Be nice to have something out here in So. Cal.

MattyC 03-13-2018 09:32 AM

Would def be interested. In LA. Yankees, Shoeless Joe, HOF singles.

Exhibitman 03-13-2018 10:15 AM

Burbank; collect everything (focus...wha?); can host at my office if the # is small--my conference room seats 6 comfortably.

pokerplyr80 03-13-2018 10:25 AM

I'm in OC, not far from PSA, and would be interested.

I'm also about 4 miles from the Angels stadium. If guys want to meet up then catch a game I'd be open to that as well.

Exhibitman 03-13-2018 10:29 AM

Anthony's got a good space in Culver City...not to volunteer him but...

As for RPV, yeah, I know where that is too. Back in the Silurian Age I used to date a girl out there. Had to give that up...geographically undesirable.

Fballguy 03-13-2018 10:34 AM

In that area, if you could sprinkle a little on the football side, I'd be interested in anyone with old Rams memorabilia...40's through 60's.

ggary 03-13-2018 10:51 AM

I also live in PV and have a busy schedule but I'd try to stop by if I could. I mostly have cards from the early 70's from growing up but have some early 50's cards that I picked up recently.

pwang100 03-13-2018 12:47 PM

I'm in Torrance, I'd be interested in participating. Thanks. -Phil

I'm out in the Inland Empire, so I'm probably too far away to host, but I'd be interested in being part of a get together. It would be great to meet some fellow collectors.

joshuanip 03-14-2018 11:46 AM

Sounds like there is a lot of interest. And the topics are wide.

Throwing it out there, how about we define it down a little.

Include sports cards and memorabilia from 1800 to a X. Please let me know where we should have X at?

Also, just baseball or all sports. I saw interest for football earlier in this thread.

And I think we might have a venue, but open to other options as well. Would then make sense on who is most centrally located.

Any other suggestions?

kmac32 03-14-2018 11:50 AM

In Florida now but 6 months ago I would have gone

oldjudge 03-14-2018 12:27 PM

My interests end at about 1925. I would include other sports (and non-sports) but the emphasis should be on baseball.

pokerplyr80 03-14-2018 01:38 PM

Sorry forgot to add my collecting interests. I have an unfocused collection consisting of Mantle cards, post war HOF rookie cards, and random prewar and modern cards I find interesting.

rdwyer 03-14-2018 02:19 PM

Post War definitely.

Wite3 03-14-2018 02:24 PM

I'm in too...I am in the SCV but have been known to travel. My interests are T205s and Phillies and oddball cards.

Joshua

ocjack 03-14-2018 02:37 PM

Another vote for Orange County. Sold most of my collection a few years back, starting to get the bug again. So, would enjoy having someplace to spend my money. :) Might be able to provide limited help in some form.

frankbmd 03-14-2018 03:03 PM

This thread is beginning to look like the New York City Dinner thread. Meeting at a restaurant would open up additional variables such as menu and price point, in addition to location and collecting interests of the participants. After months of planning you will please no on, but the thread itself will be entertaining and easily surpass the minimum standards of the forum. :D

pokerplyr80 03-14-2018 03:04 PM

Another possible place for a meet up would be the long beach show. That way there would be enough space if no one wants to host.

SMPEP 03-14-2018 04:54 PM

Put me on the list.

I collect a little of everything.

Patrick

smotan_02 03-14-2018 05:26 PM

Im interested and I live in El Segundo (next to LAX).

I collect Army football, but have quite few college and pro football programs (wide array of teams) for sale from 1930s (1940s for pro)-1990s.

edjs 03-14-2018 06:42 PM

I would be interested. Put me on the list. :)

paul 03-14-2018 09:28 PM

Jay Miller pointed out this thread to me. I'm definitely interested. I live in Orange County, collect Hall of Famers from the beginning, and on the modern side I collect everything of Tom Seaver.

Paul

Southern California Vintage Meetup

Hi All:

I will be interested in meeting up. Currently, I live in the South Bay and work in Culver City. I mainly collect baseball hall of fame cards and autographs (pre-war and post-war).

Thanks for starting this thread.

dstudeba 03-14-2018 10:46 PM

San Diego, put me on the list please.

Prewar PCL, 50s regionals.

Andy Sandler 03-14-2018 11:47 PM

I am interested, too.

I am interested, too. I collect a little bit of everything, though my main interests currently are anything pre-1930 PCL and California League baseball, and anything pre-1940 Pro basketball.
I have been active in the hobby since 1973 and would meet anywhere in southern California for a get together.
Thanks, Andy Sandler (914) 388-2940 La Quinta, CA

Dude that describes my collection exactly, lol.

Hope this comes together, looks like lots of us in the region.

joshuanip 03-15-2018 08:15 AM

Sounds good guys.

We have confirmed with the venue and plan to meet Saturday April 28th in Culver City.

I would say focus is baseball cards and memorabilia from 1880’s to 1970. Great if we can bring prewar material as this is a prewar board. But ok if you want to bring stuff outside of this year range or sport. I will bring according to what the group feels ( I still have a few modern football cards myself). But let’s do a first meet and greet and see how it goes.

Please send me an email of your name, what you would like to see and bring (interests), and if you have any food allergies or veggie preferences. My email joshua.nip@gmail.com.

Please reply by March 31, that should be plenty of time. I may close early if we get a large enough group.

Once we get a good group I will shoot out a list of our first names and interests to those coming. Afterward we meet I will shoot out emails who attended so you guys can connect afterwards.

Any questions pm me or call 6262408138.

The venue is tentatively in Culver City. Other specifics provided via email.

uffda51 03-16-2018 02:09 PM

In Pasadena. Focus is 19th century baseball. Free on April 28 so far.

joshuanip 03-16-2018 03:53 PM

Hi Bruce, sounds like you and old judge would have a lot of card interests in common.

oldjudge 03-16-2018 05:10 PM

Indeed we do. I'm in. Bruce-Do you want to car pool?

uffda51 03-18-2018 04:50 PM

Sure.

Bcwcardz 03-18-2018 07:41 PM

I’m in San Gabriel and am interested, just have to check my schedule. Sounds fun!

Dewey 03-18-2018 10:10 PM

Email sent. Interested too. Checking schedule.

I primarily collect Dodgers photos, especially Jackie Robinson and figures connected with his story. With a smattering of pre-war photos, HOF autos, postwar cards, tickets, and miscellany thrown in.

doug.goodman 03-19-2018 02:04 AM

I would love to join you guys, but I'll be in Denver that day.

Doug

Update

Hi guys,

Just wanted to give you guys an update.

First of all, big thank you to Anthony Nex (Griffins) on allowing us to use his spot. We wouldn't have been able to put this together if we didn't have a perfect place like his to meet.

That said, the venue will be in Culver City on Saturday April 28th. Timing is tentative, but I was thinking 5-8 PM. I was trying to find a time where it was late enough for people who had work would still join, but also not too late as people are coming from OC, Inland, and La Quinta. Let me know if that timing works with you or if you want it earlier. I will let the majority decide and confirm the actual time when I email the meeting address at the end of March.

Some of you inquired what (cards/memorabilia) to bring. Its really up to you. The initial goal posts was pre-1970 cards and memorabilia. From the responses I received to date, here are the collecting interests of those who are coming (in no particular order), so if you have a pretty broad collecting mandate, you can bring accordingly:

- First 5 HOF cards + Cy Young and Lou Gehrig.
- Pre-1900 baseball photographic cards
- Collector's grade T205s and Phillies 1880-1980, and oddball baseball
- HOF pre and post war RC cards, type I photos and memorabilia
- Collecting J. Orlando's Top 250 sportscards in the hobby
- Pre-war Hall of Famers + Tom Seaver.
- Pre war baseball mostly graded by PSA . T206’s and other tobacco cards.
- 19th/20th Century Type Cards/Print Freaks
- Pre-war cards, mostly PCL, Southern Leagues, but also pre-war HOFer
- 19th century baseball
- Prewar PCL, 50s regionals
- Pre-1930 PCL and California League baseball, and anything pre-1940 Pro basketball
- Pre-war photos, HOF autos, postwar cards, tickets, and misc. Jackie Robinson fan.

Finally, for those who I do not have an email/contact # for, I will be sending you an instant message shortly. If you rather not provide no worries, let me know and I will contact you through net54. Otherwise it would be cool to create a contact index of those who attended, and I can shoot it out after we meet.

Looks like we have a good group, about ~25 people interested. P.S. Food and soft drinks will be provided. Look forward to meeting you all!

Damn...I have to go to a fundraiser for a board my wife serves on that night.

rdwyer 03-20-2018 04:37 PM

As I told Joshua, it's my birthday that day. Everyone make sure you bring me presents. :)

Griffins 03-20-2018 04:55 PM

sounds like fun, thanks for putting this together Joshua, looking forward to it.

joshuanip 03-20-2018 05:47 PM

Question to those coming; what time works best? Definitely on the 28th, but the timing is flexible. Can give me some indications of what you prefer? Just want to check the temperature of the board.

Had a couple people ask to push it earlier. If we can get more people to come if we push it earlier, then we will have it earlier. If not, no change.

Joshua

rdwyer 03-20-2018 06:06 PM

Noonish

oldjudge 03-20-2018 06:38 PM

Earlier works better for me, but old time was fine too.

edjs 03-20-2018 07:08 PM

It doesn't matter to me, anytime.

Griffins 03-21-2018 09:28 AM

anytime that day works for me

I have seen local card shows with less attendance. If I were in the area I would be first in line. Have fun guys and thanks for doing this, Joshua.

Thanks for creating this board Leon!

Taking the read across, it seems many of us prefer to push the time up. So we are finalizing the time. I would say 11AM* to 3PM. No more changes.

As an update, I have sent out both an evite and a email of the venue location and time. If you have not received it and are interested in attending, please send me your email and I will add you onto the list..

*Food will be available at noon though (not sure if I will get there by 11).

MorrellMan 03-23-2018 07:32 AM

Very cool - I'll be there - thanks for hosting Anthony.

Leon 03-23-2018 07:45 AM

Have fun Joshua and others. To be clear I didn't start this board. There were 2 people before me, Elliot B who actually did start it, and Bill C, who ran it for 1-2 yrs. But for the last 15 yrs or so, with two other mods, Dan and Brian, we have moderated it.

Joshua - I just sent a PM. Sounds like fun. We don't get much baseball card action in SoCal. I wish that we could turn it into a small show like Adam set up a few years ago.

Hi guys. Final reminder as our meet up is just two weeks away. Got a great showing so far!

For those who have sent interest, please update your rsvp on evite or email me (if you don’t do evite) so I can get a headcount. Sending out a reminder today.

If you want to come and have not received an email/evite from me, please email me at Joshua.nip@gmail.com.

Josh, I'm really looking forward to this, and thank you for all the effort you are putting into this. I think this will be a great start to building a collectors community (as opposed to individuals) here in Southern California. Maybe in a few years they may even re-think having another Nationals out here.

Griffins 04-23-2018 06:05 PM

Just a reminder that the meetup is this Saturday. If you haven't gotten an invite yet and you're in the LA area shoot Josh or myself a pm.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

joshuanip 04-25-2018 11:04 AM

Hi guys,

Got a lot of feedback all over the map on format of the meeting and what to bring.

Regarding format, got a number of inquiries if this was a show and tell and/or buy sell trade. I got comments that were just buyers, and others requesting if they can sell or trade. In the interest of trying to make this as successful as possible, I say lets have all of the above. I think if we can get a few people's wish lists fulfilled and/or create a few new trading partners (with a face to go along with it), it would make this meeting even more successful.

On what to bring. I initially tried to provide people's collecting interests on the original email, but the list sort of sprawled from there, so please forgive me if I missed some people. There has been expressed interest on pre-1900's stuff, tobacco era cards, pre-war and post-war HOF cards, pre-war football/basketball, memorabilia, and modern. I know that is a pretty wide net, but there were a lot of responses that said they collect everything...I'm guessing no one is bringing their 1980/90's cards...

That said, there have been some that asked what to bring. I would open that up to you guys. There has been some responses already on evite, but would love to get feedback from you guys to help each other out what to bring. If willing to provide what your interests, items looking to buy/trade and items you may be bringing to sell/trade, please do so in the comment section of the evite. Please PM me if you did not receive the evite, or do not use evite and I will post your PM for you.

Look forward to seeing you guys!

Griffins 04-28-2018 07:26 PM

That was fun!

Way to go Westside. It’s funny ours was same day as yours. Very cool experience, no? And definately something to grow - east or west. But the one thing that concerns me is chicken and ribs???!!!! We had crummy pizza and salad (sounds like the Eastside host really sucked!). Congrats guys

oldjudge 04-28-2018 10:41 PM

Joshua and Anthony deserve a big “Thank You”. The get together was a lot of fun. For me, it was great to see friends who I have not seen in a while, and to put faces to names for people who I have corresponded with in the past, in some cases for decades. Well done guys!

JohnnyFinance7 04-28-2018 11:20 PM

Yes, it was great meeting everyone and I definitely had a great time. Thank you very much Joshua and Anthony for putting this together. I look forward to the next meetup.

Joshua you da man! The bbq spread was awesome. Thanks for putting it all together and for Senor Nix for hosting. I think MVP goes to Ed Skelton (EDJS) for bringing all that killer stuff for sale. It was great seeing Jay Miller, Bruce Babcock, Andy Sandler (Adam's long lost cousin), Rick Clemons, Bill Cornell, Jason Miller and Adam Warshaw.

uffda51 04-29-2018 03:01 PM

Thanks!

Thanks to Joshua and Anthony for putting this thing together. Good food, saw some old friends and met some new ones, saw some nice cards. And didn't have to fly to get there . . .

ricktmd 04-29-2018 03:19 PM

A fun experience. The get together was a good chance to speak face to face with old friends and connect with people who I have dealt with and never met. I believe everyone who went had a terrific time. Joshua and Anthony did a great job . Anthony's has an incredibly cool space and the bbq food was delicious.

vintagerookies51 04-30-2018 04:07 PM

Cool idea, looks fun. I’d be more than down if there’s ever one in the Midwest. And I’d probably need to add quite a few cards to my collection in order to have anything to trade
