The Color of Exhibits Guide
Hi All,
I put this little guide together of one of my favorite cards- exhibits. I love all the color variations and wanted to help identify the variations. I hope this will help my fellow master set or master player color collectors. Enjoy- http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse2i6onsi.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...pspq5xysjv.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6tk6fbet.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...psz4ab3gss.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdildwdjn.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...psjy79earp.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...psgdavrjcd.jpg |
Good work!!
This blue may be different than the the blue that you have pictured for the PC backs. http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...pslogi2upp.jpg |
Really cool. . . thanks.

Re: The Color of Exhibits Guide
Nice work, Scott.

Scott,
A wonderful idea and well-presented. If I may say, a valuable contribution to this intriguing niche of our hobby. Thank you, sincerely. A pioneer friend of mine, and a recognized Exhibits expert, Elwood Scharf, would have loved this. ---Brian Powell |

Hi Scott, great color guide for those of us who collect these different color variations. For the 1925-31, I think you might be missing a color (light blue maybe?) based upon Brad's Lefty Grove collection: Link. Not sure if you will include the 1929 Star Picture Exhibits or the 1931-32 Ruth Portrait Exhibits. Both of these sets have Prize Back and Exhibits back. I've also included the color variations that I know of for the 1920s Boxers/Baseball Players Exhibits.

For the 1926-31 4-on-1 Exhibits, here are two of the three color variations that I know of. If someone wants to sell me the missing sepia color tint for the Gehrig card, please PM me!

Very cool. I just have types from each year, but haven't explored color variations yet. This will be a great help when I go down that path.

Excellent work Scott , thanks .

Scott that's a great exhibit reference, thanks for posting it

That's really great work, Scott! Thanks for sharing the info and examples. I've often wondered about the color variations. I actually collect the boxer Exhibits more so than baseball.

great to have a go-to source for accurate exhibit info. thanks!

Klein Exhibits - Tints
Great thread.
Here's my run of Chuck Klein's. The only color I know I'm missing is a green/blue tint. I haven't seen any other color tints other than those I own + the green/blue variation. I have always assumed there is a yellow out there, but I don't recall seeing one. Please let me know if you have or have seen any color I don't already have below. I'd be scared to learn that I also need an Orange, a Pink, and the three "Dual Color" variations that Scott listed. I have my Klein run listed as: (1) Black & White, (2) Blue, (3) Green, (4) Sepia, (5) Light Green, (6) Purple, (7) Red, and (8) Brown. I think my scanner was "funky" with the red one as it is a little more red than shown. http://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...Klein%20BW.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...-%20Blue_1.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...0-%20Green.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...0-%20Sepia.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...ht%20Green.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...-%20Purple.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...lein%20Red.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...0-%20Brown.jpg It's pretty clear that my two green ones are very different shades of green. Also, there is a pretty clear distinction between the brown and sepia versions. I'm not sure if this throws a wrench in Scott's original post at all. Here's the Green/Blue tint that I don't own: http://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...ank%20Back.jpg Would love to see any other color variations of Mr. Klein. |
Thanks for posting Scott. This stuff should be in a book filed under education in the library!
|
Thanks Scott. There should be more info disseminated and consequently popularity in these cards, as they have the best visual image quality of the twenties and thirties!
Best wishes, Larry |
Scott this is awesome thanks for your work on this! We love Exhibits!

Thanks glad you all liked it.
One thing to note and especially with the 1925-31's PC backed is that the colors do fade (I imagine from exposure to sun/light) so you can find many different shades of the colors, seems to be more pronounced on a few of them blue, red. I do think there are some undiscovered colors (maybe the print machine had another color loaded, paint got blended together, etc). Here is one I am not sure of, looks more aquamarine (not really green or blue) to me but could also be some kind of fade- http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...anerport50.jpghttp://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...psvm99cwb0.jpghttp://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...inggreen40.jpg |

I think Old Cardboard has a run of Hartnett PC back colors.

What about 1939-1946 Exhibits?
Scott,
I know you and I have emailed in the past about the 1939-1946 Exhibits, mainly pertaining to Ted Williams. I know of various shades of sepia vs brown and then black & white on these (mainly experience with Ted Williams), but have you seen any other colors done for the 1939-1946 Exhibit cards? Dave |
I am not an expert, nor do I follow them religiously, but don't remember seeing different colors..other than what you mentioned.
