Rare Dazzy Vance Card Found

Sharing this article I saw this morning about a 1919 Zee-nut Dazzy Vance that will be going up for auction in April. His family owned the card and it comes complete with the coupon

What exactly was/is Zee-nut (or Zeenuts?)?? I know the cards feature PCL players, so they must be from out here on the west coast, but I really can't find any info on where they came from. Were they put in packages of nuts, or something else? Any insight would be appreciated.

Definitely a candy, though I have never heard of anyone finding a wrapper. Because of no wrapper, my personal theory is that it came on a big tray, and was placed in an envelope when you bought it, and you where handed a card. The cards don't seem to have any candy stains, like 1914 CJs, so I think it is very possible. As good a theory as any, I guess.

Here's a picture of the candy, in this (adorable? creepy?) ad for the product from back in the day:

That looks awful.

Jeez, picture looks like something from a zombie movie.

Definitely came in a package, card and product together. Here is a 1912 ad from the San Francisco Call

It will be a red letter day if one of these boxes ever turns up.

I was always under the assumption from the experts that the cards came in boxes but NO ONE has ever seen a box in person. I wonder how much one would be worth if it ever did show up in an auction? Not much because it is just a box or a lot because of the rarity even though it is from the PCL.

That is a great ad piece / score book. Thanks for sharing.

I have another Zeenut ad I could share, but it is so blatantly racist that I dare not post with my name associated with it.

Just letting you know that I know exactly where that quote came from.

The pictured Zeenut candy bar (i.e. cow pattie) was produced by the Chase Candy Company in Los Angeles prior to the Collins McCarthy (San Francisco) Zeenut product which was more like a Cracker Jack product. Marc...I know the ad you are referring to, and it is best not to post it. Such promotional material was widely accepted by society a century ago, but is not accepted today... The Zeenut cards also were distributed in boxes of Ruf-Nek, Home Run Kisses and a few other products in later years.

Well, there goes my theory. Now, where to hunt for a box.....thanks for posting that image, something I had never seen.

Hi Everyone,

This new find is going to be in our February auction. This is the first Zeenut Dazzy Vance with the coupon I have ever seen and it is to the extent of our data bases the first one with the coupon to be offered at auction.

How many more could be out there? If you have one - send me an email: peterc@ha.com with an image.

Thank you,
Peter
