Grading Template?
 

I was wondering if anyone uses a template of sorts that helps determine card size, and centering or if I should invent one lol

All jokes aside, is there something where you can scan the card and be able to tell the size of it so you can detect trimmed or factory trimmed cards?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I used to measure my raw T206's by millimeters. If it was at least 67 mm. , it was fine. At 66 1/2, probably still original. But at 66 mm. or less, good chance it was trimmed.

A template is a good idea for most cards, but not all. If you built one, I think there might be some interest.

There are ones for modern cards that get mentioned on blowout forums every once in a while. It's a clear plastic overlay that can measure the centering easily.

a digital caliper and your eyes would work well.

Yes there actually is a program available that can do this via computer. It is not currently available to the market though:(

im a little surprised there is not an available program for this? you'd even think a scanner software could somehow do this?

My dental software at work has a ruler function to measure things on radiographs.

Agree, I would think scanner software would be able to do this pretty easily. Interesting thought.

I didn’t think you can measure a card to determine if it’s been trimmed due to the old press-and-trim alteration made infamous back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I may be mistaken, but I believe trimming can only be detected with a loupe.

You very well may be correct, and of course it was possible that I missed some trimmed cards, but that's the way I did it way back when.

The AI/Biometrics used for the program is nothing special really. A few measurement tools, some digital fingerprinting, and other stuff like that. Kinda the same stuff Facebook and social media sites use. It is how it’s used that makes it proprietary.

You are not mistaken. You are absolutely correct.

Also, there are cards that are naturally cut smaller, and there are cards that are naturally cut larger (that could be trimmed down to regular size), so you can't go by size alone.

This is what I use, when using old school tools like a ruler to mm. I try to measure to the nearest 1/4 mm, which could create some inaccuracy, but I typically find changing one or both by 1/4 or 1/2 mm doesn't make a big difference.

I'd love some kind of app that could detect size and centering, but until then, this has been very helpful to me. It has kept me from submitting certain cards or helped me decide whether to check "no qualifiers" when submitting.
