Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
Boston paid $10K for Kelly, they didn't pay him $10K to plau. I suppose semantically it's kind of the same thing because the Boston team was out $10K to have them play for them.

The Rangers signed A-Rod to that huge contract, the Yankees only took over the contract. I'm sure it's going to be something hard to live up to because if you're the highest paid player at a particular sport then the fans are going to expect the athlete to be the best (or at least one of the best) at the sport. New York fans, without a doubt, have the some of the highest expectations for their players. The sad part about this is that an off year for A-Rod is a career year for a lot of other players. Maybe the fans razzing him will mightr humble him a bit.

Edited to answer the question - I think the Boston fans adored Kelly because he seemed bigger than life according to the accounts of the time. He was one party animal! He only lived to be 36.

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
How much money is $10,000.?

Connie Mack turned down an opportunity to buy Babe Ruth + Ernie Shore + Ben Egan for $10K on July 7, 1914. The offer was made by the Baltimore Orioles (IL) owner, Jack Dunn.

It's all timing, and the Federal League was knocking at his door.

A-Rod, however, considers $10K trivial.

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
If A-Rod averaged 600 plate appearances a year and had about 8 pitches per appearance then that would be about $5K per pitch. Kind of sickening when you look at it like that...
