Pre-War Baseball Christmas Gifts 2011

Hi Folks,

Looking for gift ideas for a pre-war baseball fan who already has a lot of stuff that came out in the last 10+ years (ie. books, DVDs, etc.)

So I guess I'm asking whether anyone knows of any recently marketed items - say in 2011 - that I could consider.

My first thoughts lean towards books and DVDs, but if you have other suggestions, that would be cool. (Not looking at purchasing cards/collectibles themselves, but resource materials on these things would be cool.)

Price between $10 and $300 please!

Cheers,
Blair

Maybe Ken Burns Baseball (if on dvd), or Glory of Their Times audiobook, might already have...
Or the T206 book about the players and their stories.

Hi Erick,

Thanks for these suggestions - the T206 book might work (the others are a definite already have).

Cheers,
Blair

And if you want a cheap stocking stuffer...I just ordered and got a very nice mousepad featuring t205 cards. Works great and very colorful! Love it!

Old Cardboard

Last Christmas I received the past issues of Old Cardboard in conjunction with a subscription for future issues. A great gift that gave and is still giving...

I have looked the last couple of years for a nice wall calendar that features vintage baseball cards. I had a nice one back in the 1980s, but haven't seen any at all in recent years.

Wouldn't a 12 month wall-calendar with a different group of cards each month (Old Judge - January), (T206 - February), (Cracker Jacks - March), etc. look really cool? It would need to be done with photos of real cards, not reprints.

There must be no money to be made in calendars or else someone would have done it recently.

Just a thought..................

Old Cardboard

Can anyone tell me about how many pages one of the Old Cardboard magazine issues generally have? I'm thinking about purchasing the $99 dollar special, but at least want the read to be worth it. Thanks in advance!

If you click on each issue on their website a table of contents for the issue comes up. I clicked on the first few issues and it looks like each one of those issues is about 50 pages (give or take).

Cheers,
Blair

Pat Hughes the current radio announcer for the Cubs has 10 CDs of different radio voices of baseball out. Announcers are past and some present. Pat will also autograph the CDs for you. one of the CDs is Pat and Ron Santo, Harry Carey, vin Scully, and many more. sounds like a must for any baseball fan. Not cards but all baseball

Repligraphs

2 Attachment(s)
I got these Repligraphs a few years ago. They have a few more players available as well.

They have great portrait photos of the early pre war legends, along with a replica signed check. I like these because they look cool, and they only cost $50 each, already framed.

I hate buying autographed memorabilia because of all the fakes, and these are a great alternative in my opinion.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Tony

I would also recommend a subscription to Base Ball: A Journal of the Early Game. Two issues each year, focusing on pre-1920 baseball with a significant emphasis on the 19th-century game. John Thorn was the first editor, and now Peter Morris has taken over. A wonderful range of articles from many of the most prominent baseball researchers. I have really enjoyed my subscription, which comes with a great electronic access page that includes back issues.

Finally, how about a SABR membership?

Thought I'd point out to the original poster (and everyone else) that Mitchell & Ness is having a Black Friday special today -- all jerseys are $100 (most are normally 250-300).
I just bought a Babe Ruth Boston Braves and Roger Maris Cardinals.
Website is www.mitchellandness.com

Tell me if I'm wrong, but it looks like this place sells all these exact jerseys and more for WAY less...they look identical to me...anyone deal with these guys?

Ditto what Kevin said, I received my copy a couple weeks ago and was surprised how many players are covered. This is far from a copy/paste effort from previous player profile texts. Great read that helps bring the 19th century game alive.
