ca. 1927 Tabacalera La Morena Ruth & Gehrig card

Posted By: leon
Another interesteing new pick up is this card of Ruth and Gehrig. It looks like Gehrig is almost horseplaying with Ruth. Here is the write up from REA (thanks REA)...And if anyone else can add more about this series then all the better:

Extremely rare circa 1927 Tabacalera La Morena Tobacco card featuring Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, each clearly recognizable, along with other players at the plate. This is an extraordinary card. It is one of the few vintage cards featuring Ruth and Gehrig together on the same card, and it is from one of the few card sets issued circa 1927. It is also extremely rare. Few card issues of any type approach the rarity of this unusual tobacco issue, which is no doubt related to the fact that they were issued only in El Salvador. This is the key card of the set and the only example we have ever seen. Tabacalera La Morena cards feature color-tinted black-and-white photos of individual players or in-action game scenes with Spanish captions on the reverse briefly identifying the player(s) or game-in-progress scene featured on the front. The photographs used are unique to the set. Advertising at the bottom of the reverse of each card translates to read "Courtesy of Rich Brown Tobacco, the Champion among Consumers." The reverse also has the card number ("No. 116") and text which (translated) reads simply "Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth on the baseball field." This is a fascinating circa 1927 tobacco-card rarity featuring Ruth and Gehrig together, dating from the height of their fame. The card is bright, crisp, and clean, technically grading Vg-Ex due to a tiny diagonal corner crease in the upper right, but otherwise in Ex-Mt condition.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
I won this raw in a Teletrade online auction about ten years ago for around $100. There were a few more from the set for sale at the same time, but they were not catalogued then and I had no idea what they were.
Bob Lemke lifted this for use in the SCD catalogue at some point.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
Does anyody have a photo of Dud Lee they could post to try and confirm if the man on the right is in fact Phil Todt's teammate, as the guy on the left looks like Phil Todt. I am suspecting the card pictures Phil Todt and Dud Lee and they just made a mistake in the caption.
-Rhett

I will try to get a larger scan of the Tabacalera La Morena up later if I get a chance.
