Mays crossover opinion

I recently picked this up. Nice centering. Older SGC Label. SGC 70, so a 5.5
I noticed a centered PSA 2 closing in on $2k.
Makes me think a PSA holder might be a good idea for this one.
Should I request a 4 minimum grade? Thoughts...

If I was you seabass I would just keep it in the SGC slab, although I feel like we have talked about this before somewhere. Although a minimum 4 might be doable, sharp looking card. Pretty sure that SGC themselves would reevaluate the card as well since it's a legacy flip so you couldn't even guarantee a 5.5 from them.

No doubt that card is at least a PSA 4

Beautiful card nonetheless!

Mark70Z 05-30-2016 06:40 AM

Mays

Card, at least from the pics, looks at least a PSA 4 to me...

i dont believe that psa 2 sale you mention is legit..a nice psa 5 just sold for $2000 yesterday on ebay open auction...

RayBShotz 05-30-2016 07:16 AM

I would roll the dice on that card crossing to a 5.
PSA seems motivated to get all cards into their holders.
Just my two cents.

I think a PSA 4 is a pretty good bet. Here is a link to a PSA 2 that is just under 2K with bidding still open.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/381643007063...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

1952boyntoncollector 05-30-2016 07:34 AM

that current auction on that '2' is really between two bidders since the $1000 mark.....they have driven the card to the $2000 mark...just the two bidders..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Topps-W...gAAOSwneRXQkiO'

heres a link of a '5' that sold yesteday for about 2k

(its interesting that someone with the same feedback score (currently 477) bid his max of $1700 on the '5' and bid $1901 on the '2'...same feedback score...perhaps the same bidder?

theres a decent 3.5 asking 1400 right now or best offer

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Willie-Mays-...0AAOSwMN9XQ13d

i just saying, if you have a '2' dont expect to get 2000 for it..except in the rarest or rare occasions... the mays cards have gone up a ton though so who knows

Canofcorn 05-30-2016 08:13 AM

Thanks for the opinion guys. I also think that PSA 2 auction might also be BS, but it does show that centering carries a premium. That 3.5 has a crease and the 5's top to bottom isn't all that great. In the end, I'm very excited to be owning this card again. My collection took a huge hit when I purchased my 52 Mantle last year, as I had to sell off almost all my heavy hitters, including a 52T Mays, Robinson, & Campy on Net54 (along with my favorite Trouts) Now that the dust has settled - I'm slowly building it back up, although these spike in prices are making it tough.

well that '2' cant just be for corners...gonna have to be creases paperloss or wrinkle if all we have a his great centered card with no staining and just some dings on the corner.....that '5' of course isnt perfect but it wasnt bad either......and if centering is a premium..that 3.5 is nice centered with the wrinkle.....so evidently centering not always a premium...

That PSA 2 ( nice) sold for $800 on Ebay 2 months ago. Now is over $1900 on Probstein with 12 hrs to go??

Canofcorn 05-30-2016 08:56 AM

Yes a little fishy lol. But I do see the prices going up. Even if you totally discard that auction

That is a great looking PSA 2. I don't think you can just write this one off as shill or fraudulent bidding. Dead centered and nice corners. It doesn't look like a 2.

As for the OPs card it's nice too. I'd say it has a chance at a PSA 5 and is worth an attempt at a cross.

Im not saying you're right or wrong. Just that's the best looking Mays 2 I've seen and those two guys might be bidding accordingly.

the fact is only 2 guys means something..especially since one of them only bid 1700 in a 5 that sold for 2000 yesterday and was decent..

but yeah if theres one guy buying everything...it only takes one....but generally when i think 'market' value..im thinking about more than 1 guy. to avoid being burned if suddenly the one guy isnt buying anymore.

Well, how many more bidders look at Probstein auctions over a regular Joe's auction?

I don't think serious card collectors just search Probstein or PWCC. My searches
for card X include all average Joe's cards as well. I can't imagine anyone trying to find a specific card/ condition just looking at those auctions. As to whether or not serious bidders prefer to buy from those larger auctions- I can't say

There are collectors out there who search PWCC or probsteins list of cards for sale and bid on a card they find interesting. One of these guys might not have been looking for a 52 Mays specifically but saw it and said hey this looks like a nice card and placed a bid.

I have made around 50 individual buys on ebay in the last 2 weeks on mainstream, commodity type Topps cards. I am completely agnostic in who I deal with. I make sure, as much as possible, to not get burned but the seller makes no difference, quite honestly. As far as more people watching big sellers auctions....yeah, I think lots of buddies still bidding on other buddies cards and running them up. I don't buy that the biggest sellers get a lot more money (legitimately). They might get some more as they do get more eyes....just not a ton.

Canofcorn 05-31-2016 07:30 AM

Sorry didn't want this thread turning into a shilling discussion between the big sellers. Of course it happens everywhere..big..small... and not just with the 2 mentioned.

I was just asking about crossover opinions and the grade you think it would receive, or if I should leave it sinc it's an old label. I got the answers I needed, thank you

Im surprised they admit they shilled it. I would expect something along the lines of "winner said he's unable to pay."

no they have admitted it..heck sometimes its just a minute after the auction ended

I crossed an SGC 70/5 '52 Robinson to PSA and got a 4, and my Robinson looked weaker than yours. I'd say you've got a great chance of at least a 4, and it might even carry over to a 5.
