I decided to buy the John Dunlop 1894 Mayo football card and not the 52 Mantle PSA 4

Well guys I decided to buy the 1894 John Dunlop football card instead of the 52 Topps Mantle card...after doing a lot of reading for the last couple of hours and finding out that the Dunlop only has 10 known copies that exist in the whole world I just had to have it. The Mantle can be found any day of the week....not the case with the Dunlop Holy Grail of Football cards.

Nice!

I'm not familiar with the Dunlop card, but you make a good point about the easily accessible '52 Mantle.

To each his own!

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:02 PM

If I really want another Mantle I will find one no problem I just find it very very cool to own a Holy Grail card in any sport.

So I guess without knowing I am sticking with vintage cards one way or another.

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:04 PM

CNN Talked about this card (not mine but another one that was found):

Wait... what??? :D

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:11 PM

CW:

Yes one member here talked about the Holy Grail of football cards and I could simply not get it out of my mind so decided to forfeit the 52 Mantle (the seller knows we just got off the phone and he agreed to sell me the Dunlop instead of the 52 Mantle).

Matthew H 04-18-2013 11:13 PM

Are you joking?

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:13 PM

Link to the card I purchased:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251260543712?...84.m1423.l2649

Has a bad mark on it but hey only 10 exist in the world who can be picky!!!:)

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:13 PM

Matthew H

No I am very very serious. I wanted to collect rare cards can't get much rarer than a card with less than 10 known to exist in all grades. The Mantle can be found any day of the week.

Matthew H 04-18-2013 11:14 PM

Nice pick-up!?

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:16 PM

Matthew H

Thanks sir!!! I know you guys been baseball fans much rather own the Mantle but keep in mind I also love football but never knew there was such a important card in that sport. I will keep this card in my family as long as possible.

Matthew H 04-18-2013 11:17 PM

I love football too, and yes, that card is scarce.

rhettyeakley 04-18-2013 11:19 PM

I have a headache!

RCMcKenzie 04-18-2013 11:19 PM

Good call

I'd much rather have the Dunlop for that amount of coin. You can always get a beater 52 Mantle down the road. I've been meaning/looking to buy a beater Mantle at a bargain price for the last 30 years. One day, I will.

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:19 PM

Matthew H

I will buy a 52 Mantle later this year just did not want to miss on the Dunlop when one is actually up for sale. See the videos on page 1 of this topic that is what pushed me over the edge to buy it. And I made sure that the seller was OK first to cancel the Mantle and sell me the Dunlop did not want to make problems for him. But the guy is very cool and very easy going so all worked out.

Thanks very much for the positive feedback!!!:) Hope you get the chance to grab a Mantle...there is a super nice one on Ebay right now in BVG 1.5 the bid is at 4000$ +.

I suffer from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) + anxiety disorder (to intense for most people) but take meds (I am much better than before) hey can't help that my brain is ill...a person with another diseases would not have to apologize for their illness. Hence the reason I do not drink alcohol anymore at all.

I always had those conditions even as a young kid. I am not crazy just nuts...hahahahaha!!!!

drc 04-18-2013 11:25 PM

You do realize that the Dunlop card is a hoax made by collectors trying to corner the market on PSA4 1952 Topps Mantles, don't you?

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:26 PM

drc

Hahahaha now that was funny as hell!!!:D

Hey have to laugh about ones own madness!!!

itjclarke 04-18-2013 11:37 PM

As an aside, it's kind of bum deal for the seller, TonyeTrade. I hope the talk on the board didn't cost him a nice sale.

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:40 PM

itjclarke

No all is OK we spoke on the phone (about 30 minutes ago) and he actually wanted to send the Mantle back in to see if it can be a PSA 5 (he regretted selling it as a PSA 4) so we are on good terms. He gets the same price as well 9I paid 12500$ for the Dunlop and had paid 12950$ for the Mantle)...he is a very cool guy and easy going so no bad vibes at all. I told him if it causes a conflict I would stay with the Mantle card but he was more than OK.

RCMcKenzie 04-18-2013 11:44 PM

win/win

My understanding is that Tony owns both cards. Zone gets some bona fides and a rare and obscure card and Tony can sell the Mantle to a much broader market. Everyone knows what a 1952 Topps Mantle card is and rich people who don't collect baseball cards buy them all the time.

Zone91 04-18-2013 11:47 PM

Rich people who do not collect baseball cards buy 52 Mantle's.......hahahaha that was very funny!!!:D

The Dunlop card will be much more appreciated by me than the Mantle. Plus who knows when the next one will come up for sale....most likely years and years can't say the same for the Mantle. I love the 52 Mantle don't get me wrong I will buy one...one day just not right now. I would not mind owning a nice PSA 2 or PSA 3 52 Mantle for a little less money.

cyseymour 04-18-2013 11:48 PM

Adrian,

I've got to admit, I'm worried for you... and I don't think I'm the only one here who feels that way. Yours is a very vulnerable situation, you've suffered from some terrible tragedies and maladies... and you don't know what you are doing with the cards, which are very high-priced items.

You gotta understand, what you are doing, there are very real consequences down the line. Maybe you can talk to some of these dealers and return the cards, get your money back, hopefully they'll understand... and then just stop. Maybe this is not a good time to be doing this... and maybe you oughta really talk with your brother a bit, as well.

It's late and I really can't be posting on your threads anymore, but I hope you'll really read this and think long and hard about consequences for this... money is not always easy to come by... people are worried.... hope you understand.

Cheers,

Jamie

Oh, I got ya, thanks. That makes all well in my mind.. still a little crazy but well. I should have opened the eBay link for the Dunlop

You are most kind sir!!! I will take that advice with a open mind.:)

I will see what I can do with the Mike Mitchell the rest I will keep. But you are right on the Mitchell card for sure.

But the Demmitt I will keep and the old judge card as well. I do not feel I overpaid to much on those.

I will not be buying another card for a few months I spent my maximum I wanted to spend on cards and not a penny more.

To all members here who are concerned:

No I have pretty much reached my limit on funds for a few months for sure....guys I am OK with my finances I pay ALL my bills and eat very well every month (I live alone and only have a pet so no one is bee neglected for sure).

This is money from a coin I sold. And 95% of the money I sold the coin for was used to pay most off most of my condo (I have been in it since 2010 just wanted to pay the most I could on it...it is a very nice place and I would not lose my condo for card purchases or any other ridiculous reason I have control over) off so I know how to handle my money. Priority is not cards it's a hobby.

I make a very good salary every month and my job is not going anywhere...very secure...I was simply confused on the Mantle. I appreciate the concern BUT you guys will not see any other purchases from me on here for a long while it will be a T206 Bill O'Hara error in PSA 2.

drc 04-19-2013 12:12 AM

I'm bipolar (manic depressive), have been since I was a kid, and there's nothing wrong with waiting a month to buy cards. They'll still be there.

Zone91 04-19-2013 12:16 AM

drc

I feel your pain mental illness is tough...keep courage sir (medication and not partying helps a lot do)!! I will slow down just was not sure about the 52 Mantle....I mostly like rare things and the 52 Mantle does not fit that description...hence my change of heart and the Dunlop is a true rare card...and the only card in my collection called a ''Holy Grail'' of any sport...and most likely the only one I will ever own that has that title.

RCMcKenzie 04-19-2013 12:30 AM

If I remember correctly there were members who were very concerned for Jaime when he started posting (not me). Have fun and take it slow. Read the OJ book and buy Lew Lipset's guide. Buy Bob Lemke's 2006 SCD guide and read thru it. Read some of the archives on here. It can be a crazy hobby, but it can also be fun and what you make it. I think Matt H had it right when he said that if someone who is not a member of this board compliments you on your baseball card collection, they are just being polite.

Zone91 04-19-2013 12:58 AM

RCMcKenzie

I am much happier with the Dunlop card than the Mantle...for me rarity is key when collecting. Thanks for the advice. I am not going to be buying any cards for a few months now so the forum will be a bit slower...I am sure some need a break.

bender07 04-19-2013 01:08 AM

You mentioned that you had offers higher than your purchase price on the Mantle. Why not sell it to one of those folks, pocket the profit and buy the football card?

Zone91 04-19-2013 01:19 AM

bender07

To many shipping fees (shipping back and forth) and extra taxes with custom fees I would not end up making a profit but losing money...it crossed my mind.

Adrian, Jamie's advice sounds both compassionate and sincere. I'm certain you make much more money than I do and can afford such nice and rare Items. However, impulsively purchasing such high dollar cards is concerning no matter what tax bracket you live in. Please be careful I fear this is going nowhere good.

Zone91 04-19-2013 01:37 AM

How much do you think I should have paid for the Dunlop card I mean only 9 of them exist in the whole world and is known as the ''Holy Grail'' of football cards...I figure it is worth anywhere from 10 000$ to
15 000$...correct me if I am wrong.

I can't see this card going down in value only up over time with such a low supply.

RCMcKenzie 04-19-2013 01:43 AM

The rich are different

Many moons ago, I studied English Lit and remember a quote, "The rich are different" I drank too much, so can't remember if it was Norman Mailer or F Scott Fitzgerald. Someone keeps outbidding me on cards I want. I'm not here to say they are crazy.

Zone91 04-19-2013 01:45 AM

RCMcKenzie

I guess we are different we worry much less...and we mean nothing bad by doing so....we simply say to ourselves I took a loss of this amount this time...but hey next week is pay day from work so all is OK in the end (all my bills are paid off and good food on the table so why worry).

I was poor as a kid growing up and try to live stress free now as a adult....but the guys here are right one must be vigilant when spending no matter how much money one has....I will take the advice and change my habits as of today I think that is the best thing to do.

drc 04-19-2013 02:04 AM

I wasn't even remotely trying make a medical diagnosis about anyone. I was commenting in relation to the earlier posts about mania.

And I admit you've chosen nice cards. Though I haven't observed the prices.

tennisguy 04-19-2013 03:32 AM

Holy Grail of Football?

I thought the "holy grail" of football cards was the 35' National Chicle Bronko Nagurski?

Zone91 04-19-2013 04:32 AM

tennisguy

Me to...I was proven wrong here.

AMBST95 04-19-2013 05:36 AM

Zone,

I hope you are honest with yourself and agree to what you've asked yourself. Yesterday, you adamantly had NO buyers remorse and today you spent over 10k on a card you had never heard of 24 hrs before. I understand that you are financially able to swing it, but I hope you slow down "in general" to avoid problems in other aspects of your life. Your penchant for the dramatic and OCD could burn a lot of relationships in the hobby, in your profession, and in life. In general, people like to know what to expect, and you are most definitely a wild card. That can be good in some instances, but I hope for your sake, that you are able to better control your illness with the help of your physicians, medications, and those close to you so that it does not impact your day to day living. As a collective, I think we are seeing a pattern in your posts that concerns us. These are all great cards, but in the end it's just cardboard. I hope that our banter with you on this board is not stoking the fire so to speak. Please take your own advice and openly discuss your decision process on these items with your brother and physicians.

Good luck to you in the future, in and outside of this hobby.

You got me on that one do not even know what that card is to be honest everyone calls the other card the Holy grail of football cards. Is that card even a football card??? I would not pay 12500$ for that card even if it is the true holy grail of football cards I love the look of the 1935 card much better.
Adrian, you wrote this to me in the other thread. How on earth did you change your mind so fast?

guy3050 04-19-2013 06:25 AM

I'm a little confuse, When Eric72 asked you if you had the 1952 Mantle in hand your response was

"Yes received it yesterday. I was talking to a few people and they offered me more than what I paid for it."

Are you now saying that you are sending the card back to the seller for the Dunlop, or you lied and never had the Mantle in hand.

Zone91 04-19-2013 06:48 AM

I said I had the Mantle in hand to protect myself from other potential buyers jumping in on the deal has happened to me in the and it sucks.
