Posted By: Mike Campbell
I have collected hall of fame autographs for many years, I can assure you this is not real. The thing I find so amazing, is that the individual that created this mockery, couldn't even try and get close to Mack's real signature, which in and of it self, would not be that hard to forge. His signature was very straight forward, even into his 90's. Amazing what garbage lurks out there.

Posted By: Mike Campbell
The Ruth sure looks good. Connie did sometimes use the traditional lower case e, or the rounded e. You can see the two variations, the one he signed, and the one on the card differ. Not an issue though. Signatures can vary so much, based on age, health, the writing surface, etc. etc. The Mack looks good. Studying signatures is an ongoing task. Even experts can be stumped sometimes. But they look good to me.

Posted By: Mike Campbell
Sorry to hear about that Rob. Very few Ruth's have a loop in middle of the the capital B. And the e in babe never touches the R in Ruth. Always seperated. That being said, it is a very good forgery, and most people would have been fooled. Nothing to be ashamed of. But it still ticks you off doesn't it? Me too.

Posted By: Mike Campbell
Sure they should, but who has the time and money to pursue UD ? Alot of individuals who do not deal in memorabilia, have very little sympathy for collectors. They still go by the mantra of "Buyer beware". Hence, who knows how the courts would rule. But yes, someone should come out and publically lambast them for selling garbage like that. It undermines the entire autograph collecting hobby. I know this is OT, but I felt it important to state my opinion.

Posted By: davidcycleback
I'm not an autograph expert, but my impression is that the UD signature is not a forgery. Rather my guess is that it came from a person signing her/his real name, but her/his real name wasn't Connie Mack. The spelling appears so off on this signature, that I don't think someone was forging Mack's name. I'll bet even Shoeless Joe Jackson would know better than to spell Connie with two a's.

Perhaps this signature came from a Connie-related document where one of Connie's family signed. Or perhaps it came from a multi-signed scorecard and, amongst a sea of Mel Otts and Cookie Lavagettos, someone thought this most closely resemebled Connie Mack.

Posted By: Rob L
the forged Ruth. I did a bit of research before I purchased this. It is a receipt and the seller had a plausible story. They also had a COA from Everything Baseball.

I compared this signature with many examples from different catalogs, looking at the slant of the letters and letter formation. I did observe the loop in the B and e-R portion of the signature, however, these are not uncommon as I found at least 10 signatures in the Halper collection with the loop and 3 or 4 with the "e" touching the R. I think the perfect straight line through the "t" may be part of the issue.

Like I said earlier, I lived and learned on this.

Rob L
