Posted By: Aaron M.
I'm going out on a limb and say they are both real. I've seen that Tigers pennant style offered in major auctions before, so I'm pretty certain that one is real at least. I wouldn't be suprised to see both pennats sell for several hundred dollars (maybe more).

Posted By: Dan Bretta
They look "real", as in vintage to me, but I am no expert. I don't think I've ever seen anyone trying to fake vintage pennants before, but there's always new ground to be broken by the scammers.....just looking at what this guy sells though it doesn't scream "Scam" to me.

If I were you Mike I would probably take a chance on that Tigers pennant.

Posted By: Aaron M.
Good catch, Mike. I remember we had a similar episode re: modern replicas of vintage baseball caps a few months ago. You might want to contact the manufacturer directly and ask them if that's their handy-work.

Posted By: Rob Dewolf
Being from Ohio, seemingly the hotbed for sports memorabilia scammers, I can attest that I know of at least one and possibly twp "legit" sports memorabilia dealers from the Buckeye state who have taken vintage pennants with the city name and worked and doctored them, tranforming them into "baseball" pennants. So, yeah, pennants aren't immune from the scum infestation.

Posted By: Mike H
It appears they are real. I wonder if there was a buy in now, or if the seller is going with an auction house. Probably the prior.
Posted By: Mark Steinberg
Both pennants are going to Hunt Auctions, for their March Live Event. I emailed the seller who confirmed this.

She said these pennants both belonged to her Dad who was born in 1889, and they have been sitting in a closet for the last 4 decades.

Somebody apparently convinced her she would realize more money via Hunt's than by selling on Ebay... probably correct, despite the seller's commission.

Posted By: Aaron M.
Mike, you are officially on pennant authentication probation.

I'm not so sure the seller wouldn't have been better off selling them on E-Bay. (Hopefully the seller consigned the pennants to Hunts rather than selling them outright to Hunts.)

The White Sox pennant is unique but unremarkable unless it specifically dates to 1917-1919 -- and even then it's rather bland. I would think it would sell in the neighborhood of $1,200 or so.

The Tigers pennant is nicer (although not one of my favorites), but I've seen it offered a few times before. I would price it about the same.

But at least now you know they are both authentic, and where and when they will be made available for sale.
