E98 Old Put Players
Posted By: Mike Williams
Since the Old Put overprint was mentioned in a previous post, I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of known cards/players with this stamp. I'm aware of a McGraw and Mack (both red backgrounds I believe)....who else has (or is aware) of other players?

Posted By: TBob
Mine is a Clarke but it is no longer an E98 Old Put, it has now become a member of a tobacco card set according to the new SCD, not sure of the designation though.

Posted By: Mike Williams
I don't see how this could "now" be considered a tobacco card. It's still and E98 that just happens to have a crude back stamp.

E98 Old Put Players
Posted By: leonl
Like it or not it advertises tobacco (with the stamp), so it is a cross caramel/tobacco card....I guess....I don't think advertising it as a tobacco card is wrong...or right.....or wrong....or right...hey someone hit "ctrl-alt-break" quick.....anyway that is how they classify it as a tobacco card, maybe a T98 ?? ...."Old Put .5 cigars"......regards all

E98 Old Put Players
Posted By: Mike Williams
of the E121 various ad back combos, I'd ask if all of them relate to candy (I already know this answer, just food for thought). Also, what about the M101-4/5's....are all these back ad's magazine related? If these "real" ads don't justify changing the designation to say a "D" etc., why would a crude stamp like Old Put change an E98 to "T something"? I wanna believe....just finding it hard too

Mike

Posted By: leon
You asked how it could become a "T" card. I told you. That is really all I was saying....but since you mention the E121 series and the m101 series I guess I will give my view of those also. First of all I believe the E121 w/ad backs should be probably classified as "W" cards. Just my thinking but a blank back E121 is a W575 so to me they are "W" cards with ad backs...and yes I know the "W" cards are cut from strips but my guess is they are still W w/ad backs...and for the "M101" series, you are correct...some of them are classified as a double ACC designation ie.. D350-2 is Standard Biscuit, H801-9 is Globe Clothing, D329 is Weil Baking, D352 is Morehouse Baking, H801-8 is Boston Store (although that is the larger E135 series)....so to sum it up it does look like the designations do follow a pattern but only some of the time....My guess is it is that way because all fo the nuance's, that I like, were not always "cared" about in the old days.....you ain't going to get me into an argument (not that you meant too).....I'll just step out on the porch and relax for a while bestest regards

Posted By: TBob
1) The new listing is a separate one in SCD as 1910 Old Put Cigar but it does not specifically say it is a tobacco set, although the "Cigar" moniker implies it.
2) I'll be darned, my Clarke IS a red background. I believe that means every known Old Put card has a red background.

Posted By: Mike Williams
Thank you for stating my point MUCH better than I originally did....I understand why it got the "T", I just don't agree with it. I guess the E94 Close Sponge Cake back will be getting a "D" designation soon???? I would love to hear Bob Lemke's comments....come on Bob!

E98 Old Put Players
Posted By: Bob Lemke
. . . we only pick up those used in the American Card Catalog, and usually only for cross-reference purposes. Old Put is listed alphabetically as "1910 Old Put Cigar" with a reference to E98 in the set's introduction.
