Thanks, Greg. I had a few more bullets left, but definitely glad I didn't have to use them!

Won 3 post war on Saturday night. Nothing too exciting, but I thought they were nice!

Added a few items, including a couple of cards I've been after for a bit - I can live with the centering on the Mantle since the image presents nicely, and thought the Speaker was solid for a 30!

Congrats Scott- nice pickups

Hi Derek,

Sorry yeah I don't know why I put 1895 they have written on the back 1896 Baltimore Orioles so that is why I was saying Baltimore and not Brooklyn.

Hope you are well,
Brad

Hmm..just realized that he is in a Baltimore uniform (I was thinking it was Brooklyn). Dang it! Nice pick-up Brad! The style looks very similar to the mid- to late-1890s Cabinets produced by Betz Studios of Baltimore (missing the black mount). I wonder if that’s where your photo comes from. Might be worth looking into...

quoting myself as I have found the exact same image of Jennings on a Betz Studio Cabinet (from a friend's private collection). I believe these were produced between 1896-1898 based on the subjects who appeared in this "set".

Here's a link to the Betz Studio Keeler that sold at REA back in 2007:

Brad - your Jennings image is definitely from Betz Studio and is very likely from this same "set" (as I have seen this exact image of Jennings but with the full black cabinet intact around it). Thought you'd like to know.

I picked up some '15 Cracker Jacks. I was really after the Branch Rickey and Cicotte. The others may be available soon.

Not prewar, but this is a set that has special meaning to me. A longtime dealer I respect a lot, used to always tell me how rare these cards were and how cool they were. Plus, I think he remembered watching the competition live on TV.

This one is for you Jay!

I loved watching those old episodes in my younger years...they were "hokey!!!"

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - attributed to Rogers Hornsby. Back in the day there wasn't cable TV, 24-7 news cycles, cameras in everyone's faces. Winter meant no baseball. Zero zip nada. In 1960 at least we had Home Run Derby. We got to see our baseball heroes up close in the California sunshine in glorious black-and-white while we were freezing our butts in living color. Home Run Derby was "must see TV" for this erstwhile ten-year old. Very cool pick-up.

does anyone know who won the W572 set? If so, I have an additional piece that goes along with the set. Have them contact me.

Their shipping is beginning to rival REA. My lot arrived yesterday. I thought a lot of the 19th century items went cheap.

RedsFan1941 11-23-2017 02:46 PM

HeRitage doesn’t charge for shipping either?

I paid like 8 minutes after getting invoiced. Did they send you a tracking number? Haven’t heard a peep and my account doesn’t show shipped.

felada 11-23-2017 07:26 PM

The tracking numbers shows up under orders. They also send out an email when the item ships.

h2oya311 11-23-2017 10:12 PM

My item was shipped before i even paid. I guess I’m
A “big boy” now.

Same with me - I paid same day and no tracking number anywhere or shipping email.

Guess I'm not a "big boy" like some others...

botn 11-23-2017 11:41 PM

I paid within minutes of getting the invoice and was notified they were going to wait a couple of weeks before they shipped. Only been buying in every auction since 2008 or so and always pay immediately. After calling them they said they would not wait to ship. Guess I will see if this ends up being true.

Same here, just not sure how. I think this was only like my 3rd time winning something from them. Maybe I spent too much in the past?

Luke 11-29-2017 11:16 AM

Anyone else still waiting on a tracking number? My echeck cleared on the 21st. I haven't heard anything from them until this morning I got an email asking me to fill out a survey about my recent purchase.

sterlingfox 11-29-2017 11:20 AM

I paid with Paypal on the 19th and my winnings also haven't shipped yet... I tried calling and emailing with no results.

This has to be the worst shipper among all of the major auction houses

I'm not sure how I got on the "nice list" either. I've bought from them here and there (probably about 5 times now), but not sure why my stuff shipped so fast. Very inconsistent w/ what others are reporting. I wonder what put them on the "naughty list"?

Thromdog 11-29-2017 12:02 PM

got shipping email on Monday. Interesting they changed over to USPS instead of Fedex ground.....

So... I would assume unfavorable responses on the survey...

taxes

Several states have to pay taxes with Heritage, including Illinois where I live. I had to add an additional 10.5% sales tax, which is fine as I was fully aware of it going into the auction.

My question is: Why isn't that shown in the final sell price? If a guy pays $100K for an item, then they show the buyer's premium but not the additional tax (if there is one), why wouldn't this be reflected in the final sale price? On a final sale of $100K, that's an additional $10,500 (if you're in Chicago).

sycks22 11-29-2017 02:05 PM

I've always had great experiences with Heritage.

Still waiting for a tracking number. I wired money last Wednesday morning and no tracking number yet. Its comforting to know other people are in same boat; Heritage is usually so quick with shipping

Well, lots of other people don't have to pay that sales tax. The tax is personal to you. I would say it's not actually properly part of the final sale price. (If you live in Guam and it costs Heritage another $300 to ship a box to your hut above the water on stilts, should that be considered part of the sale price. Definitely not.)

I could see it going either way. The posted sale price I think is meant to reveal not only how much the winning bidder was willing to pay but also (more precisely and at least as importantly) how much the underbidder was willing to pay. The differential sales tax rates then complicate things enough that it's probably better for them not to include it unless/until the day when all bidders have the same required sales tax rate. Still, I can empathize with you as another of their buyers who's had to pay sales tax with them in recent years and has later wanted to sell some of the cards I bought from them.

Snapolit1 11-30-2017 10:17 AM

I've spent a shit ton of money at Heritage in the last 2 years, and sent Lee what I thought was an extremely politely worded email pointing out difficulties I have putting yet more money in the coffers with my mobile devices and the response was. . . . . well, nothing. Crickets. Interesting customer relations approach.

Tracking number sent to me, finally. I guess between holidays and a huge auction, they were just slow and/were slammed.

sterlingfox 11-30-2017 04:06 PM

I just got tracking too, but 12 days from the day I paid was way too long, holidays or not.

Won't be recommending them to anyone and am unlikely to give them anymore of my business.

Rhotchkiss 11-30-2017 05:33 PM

One less bidder/competitor in future HA auctions..... Yes!
