Maybe 2 heavy hitters went toe to toe on this one. Any other reactions to the auction results, which undoubtedly set another record.

Posted By: <b>scott brockelman</b><p>i have been tracking a couple of other single card lots, where the prices are already 3-5X's what the cards have recently brought or "thought to be worth". it is probably a case of 2-3 bidders running up the items, as the general market just does not have a broad enough base to support price levels such as these.<br /><br />scott

Heritage just makes the calcs easier for us non-math types.

Posted By: <b>Hal Lewis</b><p>Fess up to what?<br /><br />Overpaying through the nose for the card of a HOF'er that nobody outside of this board has ever heard of?<br /><br /><img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14><br /><br />All I can say is that I do NOT consider the N142 Duke Cabinet to be a real baseball "card" because of its size and the way in which someone had to obtain it.<br /><br />Thus, the E107 is Davis' "first" baseball card in my opinion.<br /><br />This is only MY opinion, I don't care if everyone feels otherwise, and I am not looking for an argument or trying to belittle anyone else's collection.<br /><br />Bruce Babcock owns one of Davis' N142 cabinets... and it is VERY lovely and very nice. Just not for me.

Posted By: <b>warshawlaw</b><p>I was high bidder on a lot when it the auction allegedly closed, had been all day, yet it went into "extended time" instead where I lost the item. Why, if I am the high bidder at the close, doesn't it close? Isn't that the idea of a closing time? I mean, why have a closing time if you aren't going to close the auction at that time? What's the point? Reminds me of the Seinfeld where they take the car reservation but don't have the car...<br /><br />I guess the logic comes from the same place that the court clerk I spoke with this a.m. was coming from. I needed to file a post-trial motion on a neighbor dispute case and they told me I had to use a family law form. I said "but it isn't a family law case" and the clerk said I still had to use the family law form. I said "let me get this straight: you are telling me I have to file a family law form in a non-family law case?" She said right, I said OK, I'll file the wrong form. Who can disagree with that? <br /><br />I have a headache...

Posted By: <b>JudgeDred (Fred)</b><p>Adam,<br /><br />The old format used to keep ALL of the lots open until the wee hours of the morning.<br /><br />This new format will close all lots that haven't received bids in the "first overtime" cycle. If the lots don't receive any action then the lot closes. Usual rules apply, if you didn't bid on the lot before the initial end time then you can't bid on it in the extended time. If the lot receives a bid then the clock starts over (I think it's a 30 minute clock). If the lot receives no more bids after the clock expires then the lot closes. This is soooooo much nicer on everyone. It basically makes you crap or get off the pot. <br /><br />I guess if you don't fill out the form (place an initial bid before the initial closing time) then the toilet (crap or get off the pot) will be off limits during the extended bidding..... moral of the story, you gotta have your paperwork done on time to do more paper work....

Posted By: <b>warshawlaw</b><p>I can understand the genesis of the concept--wanting to wait until the phones closed down when the auctioneer needed to field individual calls, tally the results, etc., and people could not get through to make their bids before a closing time. But with instantaneous internet bidding, I don't see why responsible adults cannot make note of the closing on a lot and bid in a timely manner as they would have to on Ebay.

Then they order a number 1 (which for those not educated in the greater culinary arts is a big mac, fries and softdrink).... maybe they couldn't decide if they wanted to super size it... I'm not sure how that analogy works...<br /><br />
