Today's TRIVIA....Name 3 successive HOFers at a given position....and ?

The 1st part of this quiz is easy.....

The tough part of this quiz is....is this a unique trio ?

Or, can you name 3 others that have achieved this fame ? ?

sayhey24 07-18-2009 09:11 AM

I think the easy one is Williams, Yaz and Rice in left for the Bosox.

While I'm trying to think of others, I'll try Earl Combs, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle. I know Chapman played more games than Combs in center in 1935, and maybe 1934, but Combs was still in center some of the time....

Jacklitsch 07-18-2009 09:16 AM

I probably don't understand the question.

All three of these left fielders were inducted in 1945

Clarke, Delehanty and O'Rourke

P.S. Rice is not in the Hall (yet)

Boomer 07-18-2009 09:24 AM

Capone, Mastro, Allen

Trivia

FRANK W

Ben Chapman was succeeded by Joe DiMaggio.

STEVE M

Your trio did not directly succeed each other on the same team....as Yaz followed Williams and Rice followed Yaz.

George Kelly was at 2nd for the New York Giants for 108 games in 1925.
In 1926 the Giants had Frankie Frisch at 2nd in 127 games.
And Rogers Hornsby was at 2nd for the Giants for 155 games in 1927.

This surprises me... not Frisch and Hornsby, but Kelly. I'd always thought of him as a big first baseman. I'm surprised he was at second base.

Jacklitsch 07-18-2009 09:33 AM

Is Williams, Yaz and Rice supposed to be the answer?

If so Rice is not in the Hall, at least not until induction next week.

Peter_Spaeth 07-18-2009 09:35 AM

Ted can you clarify the question? I don't understand why Williams Yaz Rice is not correct.

tedzan 07-18-2009 09:47 AM

Ted Williams....Yaz....Rice

SAYHEY24 gave the correct answer....which, will be true when Rice is officially inducted next week.

The real question is....have any other trio of ballplayers achieved this exact fete of directly succeeding
each other on a given position that are in the HOF ?

Thanks for this. In all the times I've looked at the Macmillan Baseball Encyclopedia and now www.baseball-reference.com, I never noticed Kelly played 2B for significant games.

FrankWakefield 07-18-2009 09:54 AM

Let me try another grouping

Brooklyn's shortstops....

Leo Durocher, 1939, 113 games at short
Pee Wee Reese, 1940 to 1942
Arky Vaughan, 1943, 99 games at short

I think there are more trio's than we suspect...

tedzan 07-18-2009 10:02 AM

BINGO....you have the 1st one

Technically, Frank you are correct....when Reese served in WWII, Vaughn replaced him at SS for the Dodgers.

This succession is valid, but not quite the same as rookies succeeding veteran players.

Great research, guy.

barrysloate 07-18-2009 10:20 AM

Since Ted's trivia is answered (unless someone finds another trio), let me throw out a pair:

1) Who is the only player to have identical batting average, home run, and R.B.I. totals in two consecutive seasons?

2) Who is the only player to hit exactly 40 home runs for four consecutive seasons?

Scott T 07-18-2009 10:23 AM

Adam Dunn is the answer to the 2nd question (I think).

barrysloate 07-18-2009 10:28 AM

Well done... Adam Dunn 2005-2008.

FrankWakefield 07-18-2009 10:34 AM

Hang on now....

I think I had 2 right answers up there that antedate Williams, Yaz, & Rice, in fact my two groups did it before either Yaz or Rice were born.

1- Kelly, Frisch, and Horsnby
2- Durocher, Reese, and Vaughan

And I think there are more.

Now, on to Barry's 1st question...

Rich Klein 07-18-2009 01:44 PM

Vinny Castilla

The Rockies 3rd Baseman.

Is the guy with the same triple crown stats for 2 straight years.

Regards
Rich

barrysloate 07-18-2009 02:04 PM

Good show Rich!

1996: .304, 40 HR, 113 RBI

1997: .304, 40 HR, 113 RBI

Pretty amazing, don't you think?

tedzan 07-18-2009 05:43 PM

Stengel....Southworth....Ott (NY Giants)

Hey you Trivia guys, you're slipping tonite.

I thought one of you would get this one. Anyhow, there are more such HOF "trio connections" out there.

TED Z

Peter_Spaeth 07-18-2009 05:53 PM

ted

I thought Ott took over right field from Ross Youngs.

tedzan 07-18-2009 06:16 PM

Peter

Harper replaced Youngs in RF.

Peter_Spaeth 07-18-2009 07:14 PM

Carey-Cuyler-Waner?

tedzan 07-18-2009 08:22 PM

Peter

You have a winning trio with Carey....Cuyler....Waner

tedzan 07-18-2009 09:29 PM

Since we are now expanding this to "4-somes"....how about this succession of Yankees Managers......

Joe McCarthy
Bill Dickey
Bucky Harris
Casey Stengel

This now opens the door to a myriad number of answers.

FrankWakefield 07-18-2009 09:32 PM

I'm a fan of the Cardinals.

But there are holes in the Medwick - Musial - Brock claim for left field.

Musial ONLY played at first base for the 1957 and 1958 seasons. Wally Moon spent a lot of time in Left in 1957, and Del Ennis in 1958. Musial was only in 12 games for the 1941 season.

Ernie Koy was in left for 91 games in 1940, Medwick was out there for 37 games.

In 1932 the Cardinals used 10 different players in left field. Ernie Orsatti played out there for 40 games, more than anyone else. Orsatti played 55 games in center. Joe Medwick was in 26 games for the Cardinals that year, 7 in left and 19 in center. Can't hardly claim a streak from Hafey to Medwick with that gap.

I still think there are more...

three25hits 07-18-2009 09:36 PM

St Louis Cardinals

1980 - 1990 Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog
1990 - 1996 Joe Torre
1996 - current Tony LaRussa

Not sure if Whitey will make it (he should). But Torre and LaRussa are locks.

sbfinley 07-19-2009 02:41 AM

June 21 1950
Early Wynn (Cle 5 - NYY 1)

June 22 1950
Bob Feller (Cle 6 - NYY 2)

June 23 1950
Bob Lemon (Cle 13 - Wash 4)

Beat that.

tedzan 07-19-2009 06:34 AM

PHILLIES HOF trio

Sam Thompson (RF > 1896)

Ed Delehanty (1B > OF 1897)

Elmer Flick (RF 1898)

My info is somewhat fuzzy as to whether Delehanty played RF, which is the field pos. that Thompson and Flick played.

Some one please check this out.

Thanks,

TED Z

kkkkandp 07-19-2009 08:09 AM

Who's on First?

Delahanty was primarily a left fielder.

tedzan 07-19-2009 12:03 PM

Kevin

Thanks for checking it out. I wasn't sure that my Phillies trio would be valid.

Best regards,
