Wow! Two excellent Heilmann's. And you are going to pass me by soon, taz. I'm sitting at 250 (a number not likely to move until new members go in).

Soon? Probably not, Cobb and Comiskey are probably the only 2 under $1k that I need, after that-who knows???? You know I avoid cuts whenever possible, so the costs are usually higher. Things get crazy when you get to our numbers. That stupid supply and demand law.

Klrdds 12-06-2016 03:38 PM

Taz and Bombjack...
250 is a heck of a collection considering that you can never complete this or for that matter ever really get close to completing it.
I gave up at 296 and was confident in 275 of them.
One thing that will help is that the 19th and early 20 th century ball players won't be on the ballot until 2030 so there will be ample time to increase your numbers as they elect members that aren't hard to acquire and you also have plenty of time for speculative buying as I did for many years with guys like Deacon White , Alex Pompez, Effa Manley, Hilton Smith , Turkey Stearnes, to name a few that I purchased years before their election.

tazdmb 12-06-2016 06:23 PM

Thanks Kevin, but they are actually on the ballot in 2020, so I better hurry! :p

No one. There are more pressing reasons to wish it were 2020.

Out of many new recent pickups, these are two of my favorites.

Sybil Bauer (1903-1927) - Gold medalist in the 100m backstroke at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. She was so good she broke the men's 440yd backstroke record by 4 seconds in 1922. She died of cancer in 1927 while a senior at Northwestern University. She left behind her fiance, a Chicago sportswriter named Ed Sullivan. Yes, that Ed Sullivan.

Tommy Hitchcock (1900-1944) - Considered the greatest American Polo player of all time. Won a silver medal in polo at the 1924 Olympics. He enlisted with the French forces in WWI later transferring to the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew in the Lafayette Escadrille. He was shot down and captured. He escaped when he jumped from moving train as it crossed a river. Walked 100 miles to the Swiss border. Attended Harvard and Oxford after the war. Re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He died in a plane crash in England.

Nothing great, but another addition to my Hall of Very Good:

mighty bombjack 12-13-2016 10:26 AM

Great letter there, Frank. Makes me wish we could see the initial letter's questions and list of players!

Is that a gamble that Allen has an outside shot at the Hall (something I'd never considered before), or just a cool item that caught your eye? It's a neat piece in any case.

Klrdds 12-13-2016 12:17 PM

Taz that is a great piece.
I had several Newt Allen autographs in my collection and he always in my experience added nice little notes to his responses like many Negro League players did . Unfortunately while Newt may make the HOF of nice guys I don't feel that he will end up in the Baseball HOF because there are many other deserving candidates ahead of him in my opinion.
.

You are probably correct, but it was a small investment compared to say my Dahlen investment. At this point, I am not sure if any players pre-1950 will ever make the HOF. The veterans committee barely votes on them and when they do, they don't like to let anyone new into their boys club. Yet I digress.

Klrdds 12-13-2016 01:59 PM

Taz I agree with you totally . It is a sad fact but if anything will happen I believe it will be in 2020 and that could set the tone for the future of the pre 1950 players getting into the HOF.

New addition to my women in baseball collection. Althoough the AAGPBL ceased to exist in 1954, a team of top players from the league continued to barnstorm for several years thereafter. This is a signed team photo of the 1956 incarnation of that barnstorming team.

Robert F. "Red" Daughters

1 Attachment(s)
Not my typical autograph pickup, but was excited to get my hand on this 1951 gpc. "Red" enjoyed a single game at the major league level. The date was April 24th 1937, and the sox were playing their home opener against the Bronx bombers... Their were 7 hall of famers in the lineup that day: Gehrig, Lazzeri, dickey, ferrell, Doerr, grove, and Cronin. The game was a see-saw battle that went into extra innings. Daughters got the call to pinch run in the 10th for Rick Ferrell... He ran the bases successfully and scored the 5th run for the home team, but it was enough to get the win.

Daughters never got another shot... 1 game, 0 at bats, but the tale of a lifetime: scoring an extra inning run against the yanks in a home opener!

Just don't come across his signature too often... Happy to add it to my collection

One of the dangers perks of this site is finding auction houses I had not known of.

I own a '34 Japan Tour that was actually signed in Hawaii. This is from a '32 US Tour to Hawaii. Image only shows one side but along with Ruth, Jimmie Fox, Mickie Cochrane, Moe Berg, Lefty O'Doul and others signed as well.

1933 Goudey Lefty Grove

(I added this over on the card side as well.) Am super thrilled about adding this gorgeous signed card to my collection. I don't normally go after the signed Goudeys, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Lefty Grove, who has always been one of my favs. I've been looking out for a clean signature on the Goudey for years.

Thanks! I thought it was pretty reasonable, so I'm happy with it.

Not having scans of the other sides of the ball it remains to be seen whether it looks similar, better or worse, so I'll have a surprise when it arrives.

WOW ! Fabulous ball jeff!

That left grove is ridiculous t206.

A ton of nice autographs . The all American girls signed photo is so cool . I never seen anything like it .

Congrats, great pick up! I was underbidder. Went for a great price relative to what it commanded raw in Huggins. earlier this year.

Did you notice that it also sold last month in Heritage for $2,031.50?

I don't understand what's going on with this card that it's been auctioned three times since August. But, I can assure you it will be staying put with me for quite some time!

I watched those signed lots in HA but guess I missed adding the Grove to my watch list. Really weird though, think that Huggins price was like $3700 pre slab. Maybe the HA buyer thought they would get closer to Huggins the price on ebay? Regardless, beautiful card. Glad that Lefty has finally found some life stability.

Nice! Was hoping to add another name before the end of year myself but am not sure it will happen unfort.

I bought a used copy of _Press Box Red_ the story of the communist newspaper man Lester Rodney and the integration of baseball. Under $4. I corresponded with Mr. Rodney years ago and received a thoughtful letter. Book arrived and little did I know it would be signed by Lester Rodney and the author Irwin Silber. Sweet! Wish my name was Mike. Unexpected new auto day.

I hope you all are having a great holiday season!

I'm working on a HOF collection and normally stick to PSA/JSA/SGC certified items but I grabbed this piece last week with three HOFers that I didn't yet have (Greenberg, Cochrane and Goslin).

I was nervous at the lack of certification but grabbed Ron's book and the Goslin and Cochrane looked spot on. The "e"s on the Greenberg scared me a bit but when I checked for certified autographs of his on ebay I saw a few with that style e and felt better. Feel free to post any thoughts :)

theshleps 12-27-2016 05:41 PM

Can you return it? All looks slowly and poorly drawn

Seller ended up being a really nice guy and super easy to deal with. All ended well on this one.

As always, thanks a ton for all of the info and opinions. I have a ton to learn in this area and this is the best resource I've found. I hope all are having a great holiday.

Absolutely. Look at the kid's handwriting. He couldn't have forged these. And the Cochrane has not been traced over, and is definitely good.
