I knew vintage was hot but signed rookies this puts it thru the roof.

Laxcat 09-24-2015 02:00 PM

Weren't Speaker's last words something along the lines of "Don't you know who I am?" Someone sure didn't forget about him.

pokerplyr80 09-24-2015 02:58 PM

I missed that one. What did it sell for?

Goodwin Auctions

This was in the latest Goodwin Auctions, and there was some discussion about it on the Goodwin pickup thread, though I do not believe the buyer identified himself. Sadly, it wasn't me... :(

Thanks for posting the link. Awesome card but unfortunately out of my budget.

Ditto. I think signed vintage presents a special attraction that may well continue growing and growing. Plus, that card was a veritable bargain compared to what some PSA 10's from the '70's are bringing!

Best always,

Larry

Smanzari 09-24-2015 04:44 PM

The guy who snagged this is a member of an autograph forum I'm on (as well as one of its previous owners), his collection is INCREDIBLE and most of the cards he has are along the quality of this one...

I'm the one who bought the Speaker. I paid more than I originally planned to spend, but it's a pretty special card. It is a nice companion to my signed Speaker 33 Goudey.

Do you have a link to your collection? I'd love to see signed cards of major HOFers from that era.

Insane! Why was the 33 Ruth Goudey ink smudge removed? Thanks for sharing!

I thought it was too distracting, so I had it removed. I didn't like that the first thing your eye was drawn to was the ink blot.

jp1216 09-24-2015 06:38 PM

Wow. Just clicked through that collection. Simply Amazing. Great stuff Jason.

dealme 09-24-2015 07:22 PM

I'm not a big autograph guy, but that's a great collection. Many of those signatures represent some of the most important (and even infamous in some cases) figures in the history of the game. Thanks for sharing.

deucetwins 09-24-2015 07:57 PM

The Frank Thomas NNOF that is signed. Best ironic example ever.

Awesome collection.

chaddurbin 09-24-2015 08:02 PM

jason getting his due! the signed 33 goudey set is the most impressive thing i've seen in this hobby.

edit: (sorry jimb's n167 set i gotta be real...)

brass_rat 09-24-2015 08:27 PM

WOW! Thanks for sharing, Jason!

May I ask how long you've been working on the collection? I noticed the first pictures were posted in 2008, and there are a lot from March 2010. How many did you get in person?

I agree with Jeff -- I love the Big Hurt NNOF. :D

Cheers,
Steve

WOW...Jason!!!!!! Incredible! I have a maris auto rookie that's nicer than yours!!!!:p:p:p:p:p

I didn't see a cobb? Do you have one?

T206Collector 09-25-2015 08:04 AM

Signed Cobb T206

This one will be coming to Goodwin next, I believe. It comes from the same collection as the Speaker. If the price of the Speaker is any indicator.... yipes!!

Cobb

I think the key to the Speaker is the auto grade 10..This is not the only signed T206 Speaker but it is the only 10 (currently graded)....You might want to get the auto graded on the Cobb or wait a few months when PSA starts putting both the Signature grade and card grade on the same flip.

I am pretty sure that if you asked the bidders at that price point that they were less focused on the quality of the signature and more focused on the difficulty of finding a signed T206 Speaker. I would agree that it is probably not the only one, but there are no other publicly shown ones.

Someone somewhere does have this signed T205, however...

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XUgDHe3RLUd9jPHiZvJi2oRT3dysq2WPtX5u9gk-z0Y?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WbGXEXpR578/VgVnod3KWAI/AAAAAAAApkk/rbST4stIf8c/s800-Ic42/Speaker2.jpg" height="209" width="120" /></a>

Jasonxmay 09-25-2015 01:39 PM

The autograph grade didn't factor into my decision to bid as high as I did. I can tell a strong autograph from a weak one and don't let an arbitrary number influence my feelings. With that said, the Cobb t206 that was shown earlier is not a very strong signature and Cobb autographs on T206s are not as scarce as Speaker. I will be bidding on the Cobb, but I don't expect to win it. I will hold out and pay more for a nicer one. My guess is at least 15 signed Cobb t206s exist. I've never seen another Speaker. That isn't to say another one doesn't exist, but they are certainly rare.

Steve,

Thanks for the kind words. I started collecting signed rookies around 2007. I got Sandy Koufax to sign one through the mail and I was hooked. I bought what I could afford until I graduated law school and passed the bar exam in 2009. Fortunately, my criminal defense practice has been very good, and I've been able to buy a lot of very nice cards. My 33 Goudeys are my favorite.

Great to see a young criminal defense attorney with the best autographed prewar card collection in the hobby!

I often wonder what people do for their money or how they got it when they have epic items or show insane recent purchases, but that is a fairly private question for most so it often remains a mystery. I know there are a few people who have enviable collections who are either famous or are at least public enough to find out information on them such as google. I often imagine what kind of impact a guy like Gates or Allen could have on any hobby they chose if they were interested.

I was recently reading some of the PSA bios and couldn't help but wonder…doctor, lawyers, successful investors, entrepreneurs, internet millionaires, etc.? I do OK, but couldn't even fathom spending so much on the hobby unless I had much, much more in reserve to feel comfortable doing so. Most I have ever dropped on a single collectible item was around $500. When those Brooklyn Dodger UD Master sets came out, I bid on several on ebay, actually scaring myself into thinking I might actually win one a few times. Paying for it had I won was a non-issue, but I think buyers remorse would have kicked in immediately had I won one. Call me small time!

Good for you and awesome collection. The '33 Goudey Ruth #181 is one of my favorite cards of all time and to see a couple nice signed ones together is that much more impressive!!

Yeah, most on this side wouldn't give it a 2nd thought -- but, that was 1x of the 2-3 cards that stood out to me, too; an incredible collection.

Jason,
Whenever your posts show up in the "Show It Off" section on SCN, I get excited. You have hands down my favorite collection I have ever seen on the internet. What I did not know was that this impressive collection was amassed in less than 10 years. That almost seems incomprehensible.

Love the Thomas NNOF Signed....

Also the Aaron cookie version...always nice to see the non-Topps first year card signed.

Wow, you have some great items. I love that 33 Goudey Ruth. I'd love to someday get something like that. The only problem I have though with the autographs is forgeries and always having a doubt to its legitamacy, especially after paying big bucks.

A great collection deserves an equally great website to display it on. Jason let me know if I can assist with recommendations should you ever want to build one.
