Don't believe I've ever started one of these. Have to give a shout out to my buddy Dan Bretta. He sent this photo of one of the greatest multi sport athletes you probably never heard of. Best part was he gave it to me plus a postcard that my father was interested in. Dan's a great fellow collector who has helped me out several times. Thanks Dan.

Picked up a Joe Cronin pennant as an addition to a very rare bf3 set. First one I have seen in almost 20 years of collecting. Note that five of the pictured pennants have misspelled last names. Can you find them?

Thanks, can't wait! Just as exciting for me is the day my season ticket package arrives in the mail - just like the Fever Pitch movie in my house!

I'm debating wether or not to break it out to see what year and advertiser are on the other two notes.

Scott S - Congrats on the 2 early Red Sox tickets. Great graphics on the 1909.

Jay - Very nice baseball currency pieces!

Matty - I admire your patience on the bf3's. Waiting almost 20 years for a Joe Cronin is impressive. Must feel so good!

The bottle was a lucky pick up. I am looking for a Red Sox bottle if anyone has one?

Very cool! I have never, ever seen that type of "dangle" before.

Exhibitman 02-07-2017 06:39 PM

One thing I love about this hobby is how little I really know. Relatively speaking, I know a lot after 40+ years collecting, but compared to the total information out there, not so much. I was roving through eBay and came across this:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20Wrapper.jpg

I didn't even know he had a candy bar. I am a bit surprised, actually, since the candy products I'd seen before were all related to heavyweights: Dempsey, Ali, etc. Then again, his WWII stature was huge. I researched it a bit and found this from a review of one of his biographies:

"By early March 1943, his beaming, gap-toothed smile was once again on the front pages of newspapers across the nation. He was at a new apex of his fame, the accolades for Corporal Barney Ross (USMC) eclipsing even the glow of his lightweight and welterweight championship glory. His face was on Ringside bubblegum cards; he even had a Barney Ross candy bar."

OK the timing on the Ringside is a bit off but the candy bar as a WWII item is confirmed.

A little more on Ross, from Wikipedia:

He served with B Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. One night, he and three other comrades were trapped under enemy fire. All four were wounded; Ross was the only one able to fight. Ross gathered his comrades' rifles and grenades and single-handedly fought nearly two dozen Japanese soldiers over an entire night, killing them all by morning. Two of the Marines died, but he carried the third on his shoulders to safety; the other man weighed 230 lb (104 kg) compared to Ross' 140 lb (64 kg). Ross was awarded America's third highest military honor, the Silver Star, as well as a presidential citation. As one of America's greatest "celebrity" war heroes, he was honored by President Roosevelt in a Rose Garden ceremony. He was also awarded the Edward J. Neil Trophy as "the outstanding boxer of 1942" by the Boxing Writers Association of New York.

Here are a couple of recent ticket stub pickups:

One is the less sexy and much less expensive Roberto Clemente milestone hit ticket...career hit #2,000. His 3-run HR also gave Clemente 100 RBI's for the first time in his career. I also found this AP photo of Clemente from the game.

I found it interesting that the PSA authentication doesn't even mention the 2,000th hit.

The other is a Satchel Paige MLB rookie year win ticket. Paige threw his second consecutive shutout for career win #5 before the largest crowd ever to see a night game up to that point.

I recently picked up this cool original photo from the 1941 season.
It features Johnny Vander Meer photographing HOF greats Grover "Pete" Alexander and Tris Speaker on the field before a game that included an Old Timers celebration of sorts.
The photo measures about 7 1/2" X 8".

BTW, I'm uncertain where the photo was actually taken. If anyone recognizes the stadium I would appreciate you letting me know. Thanks!

Scott - Very neat photo.
I think it is Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. The Reds played the Indians in the Hall of fame game in 1941.
It looks like the stands of Doubleday field in the background and the context makes sense too.

Thanks for the info Jack! That does make perfect sense about the HOF game being the venue.

Picked up this Mets jersey, and got some opinions from you experts (thank you!) last month or so.
But I finally got it in a frame, and found a similar photo on eBay to go along with it. I think it looks pretty good on the wall!

I picked up these rolls of stickers today. I have no idea what purpose they served. Nonetheless, I have never seen them before and that's a pretty good barometer for me to add something to my 1971 Bucs collection. If anyone has interest in the roll of Steelers stickers please PM me.

I hate to admit it but I have two of those stadium models. When I picked up the stickers I initially thought they could have been used for those models. However the text differs. Has anyone seen one of these models with the football field instead of the baseball diamond?
