New member is looking for press pin pals and info

Hi all,
My first post in this subforum is to say hello to everyone and see how many folks out there follow and/or collect sports press pins. Steve Kennedy aka Mr. 1939 Baseball, encouraged me to join and post as he says there are many friendly insightful folks here willing to share and exchange knowledge about the things we love to collect. One of mine is sports-related press pins. If you are a fan or collector of them, you must know by now that there is a relative dearth of information out there about them and what there is can sometimes be contradictory, confusing, incomplete, or all of the above. I'm looking to network with people who can help put the pieces of the puzzle together and have some fun along the way. The bulk of my collection is baseball (World Series, All Star, HOF, special event, etc.) going back to the '30's, but I also have Super Bowl, Final Four and a smattering of others. I do have an article from a 1988 SCD by Jim Johnston that does go through the (baseball) press pins year by year with pictures (fronts only, no backs) that is quite informative but is the only real guide I've ever seen. I'm happy to share it here and someone currently has it for sale for $10 on ebay. So that's my story, I'm hoping to hear from some of you and we can figure this out together. Take care and be well!

Good day "ebay hunter"
I'm a long.. time baseball press pin collector, I had the pleasure of to know Jim Johnson many years ago, certainly one of the foremost authorities with regards to baseball press pins their history and availability.
I'd be happy to share my information with regards to this subject.
I would also hope that other members may join in to share their knowledge as well.

I have been collecting WS Press Pins for several years as well and look forward to learning more about them and sharing experience and info as well.

I have pretty much been piecing things together based on my own research and auction archives so any addition info would be appreciated.

I'm also in the market for one particular difficult pin, so perhaps we work together to help complete our want lists.

Press pins, where to even begin...

Hi Justin and Eliot, thanks for your replies. I'm not really sure where to begin if we want to have some sort of repository or collection of info/pictures of various pins throughout the years. Does net54 support that or would it need to be external that you would reference from net54? Not sure what's already out there, but I was envisioning something not that unlike what Jim Johnston put together except that it would be online and it would contain pictures of the BACKS of the pins as well, many times the most important way to really see what a pin is. Each pin could contain any post a member would want to add based on what they know or what they've seen. And, obviously we'd fill in everything post-1988. I think if we stuck to baseball to start we'd have more than enough to do. If anyone thinks we should go in a different direction or if something is already out there that we could simply augment, I'd love to hear it. I'd just like to solve the issue of when I see a pin on ebay or some other auction, how do I verify if it was an original issue or a restrike or simply a forgery. Should it have a threaded post of a needle post, should it have the maker's mark, etc. I'd love to hear any and all recommendations/suggestions. Thanks.
Gerard
PS - Still trying to figure out the best way to get Jim's guide out there for consumption here
