All the Cubs

I collect the all-time greatest, as defined by me, Chicago Cubs! I've been at it for years but there are still some holes. If it's bold that means I either need the card still or I'm looking for an upgrade.

Feel free to post your favorite Cubs cards on here, your recent pick-ups, or whatever Cubbie awesomeness you're got laying around.

Check out my collection website allthecubs.com

Felix Pie?

...just kidding.

Great stuff!

Probably not a Cub long enough, two seasons.

kmac32 05-30-2018 04:18 PM

How about Lou Brock?

Chuck 05-30-2018 05:38 PM

Where's Tuffy Rhodes?

I make exceptions whenever I feel like it, and I definitely felt like it with Hubbs. I have his RC and the memoriam card from 64.

I didn't feel the same for Pie and Tuffy.

I have a nice PSA 5 Jake Pfeister (Pfiester) throwing (Clean Piedmont 350-460 Fac. 25 back). Let me know if you're interested.

BTW...…….I think this probably should be moved to the B/S/T section.

I wasn't really trying to post a want list. Just the status of my Cubs quest.

Choice

Just curious that you have Kyle Hendricks listed, but not Javy Baez...or Kyle Schwarber for that matter

My ranking is based on playing time and career value (WAR) with the Cubs, with a bonus for postseason success. Believe me, I've got cards for Baez and Schwarber but they're not quite top 100-ish yet.

Great Cub collection! Is that Harry Carey on the Michael Jordan card? And why Jackie Robinson? Is it because the Cubs retired his number? :)

PS- And where is that Taylor Grignon?

Thanks! No, that is Michael Jordan on the Harry Caray card. And yes, I used the retired number loophole to justify having a Jackie RC. Everyone needs a Jackie Robinson in their collection!

Re: the Jack Taylor, not all the cards are in the display cases. That one's a post card so it takes up more room. I'll post a pic of it tonight.

New pickup. Tom Burns, #40 on the all-time list. He and Ned Williamson (#35) owned the left side of the Chicago infield during the 1880s.

Those pics are absolutely awesome, until I saw Joe Maddon's ugly mug.

I hate that fucker.

Harry Caray

As for Harry Caray, I am partial to the 1988 Peoria Chiefs issue that actually has his name on it. Plus, on the reverse it mentions his Holy Cow and his love for Budweiser.

Great collection!:
I would add a Theo Epstein card just for completion.

Bigdaddy 06-07-2018 10:20 PM

Wow, who would have ever thought that a man could put together a list of 100 greatest Cubs? I thought you'd go dry after Santo. ;)

Seriously though, great idea and a super nice collection.

I was in on the bidding for a 1/1 Topps Dynasty Epstein, but it got a little high for me. I'll probably pick up something one day.

Honestly, I started working on this years ago for that very reason. I had heard names like Bill Dahlen and Joe Tinker and Kiki Cuyler but I didn't know much about them. So I started reading about all these Cubs of yore and collecting their cards.

Shankweather 06-11-2018 03:45 PM

New pickup! Wasn't sure I'd ever find one of these. Kyle Hendricks, 99th greatest Cub of all time.

I guess that explains the inclusion of Ray Burris on this list. I’m a Cubs fan, and I did a double take when I saw that. 😬⚾️

Only 36 men started more games for the Cubs than Ray Burris. If that's not greatness...

kmac32 06-20-2018 07:05 PM

Hey Shankweather,

How about the greatness of Don Young or Al Distaso or Rich Nye. That could be a cool collection 😎

Ah, Alec Distaso, the 1,608th greatest Cub of all time. That's going deep! Can you imagine if the internet was around for the 69 Cubs? The chat rooms would roast those boys!

Al is deceased now. He was a client of mine at my veterinary clininc that I used to own in West Central Illinois. God rest his soul. Great guy. Also me5 Rich Nye. He is now a retired veterinarian. Don Young is basically a recluse. Also met Ken Rudolph through Cubs camp. Beckert is a great guy but not in good health. Gene Oliver passed a few years ago. Great names and team mates.

Nice variety in the mail today. Larry French/Vance Page, and Jake Arrieta; 48, 360, and 70 on the all time list. That Double Play card was the first in the set, so it's hard to find in nice condition. And that Pie Face short print has been a bear to find.

Shankweather 06-22-2018 02:13 PM

Jimmy Ryan, #23 on the list, and still the greatest center fielder the Cubs have ever had. This is one of my favorite cards, upgraded to an SGC 5 this week.

He's close, #134. And I've got a 1914 Cracker Jack Archer. If a player managed to get 3000 PA or 1000 IP, I usually try to get his card, particularly if he's in a Cubs uniform. And Archer had over 3000 PA with the Cubs (after my adjustment for catchers).

Complements On----

--- Your outstanding Leaf Phil Cavaretta !! That is a beauty. I have not seen one that nice before. The '33 Goudey Guy Bush is my personal favorite Baseball card. I'm concerned that the appears to be no love for Wausau Wi. hometown hero Johnny Schmitz and his Cubs years. An outstanding gentleman and life long Cub as he would tell anyone who knocked on his door !! Overall what a great focused collection.

Luke 06-27-2018 03:24 PM

This is awesome, thanks for posting! If it were my collection, I'd probably drop a T206 of someone and add a T204 just to get one of those in there. I'd also probably swap the T201 Hoffman for a E95.

Thanks, I am pretty proud of my Cavarretta, one of my favorite players. And the Goudey Guy Bush is such a cool card. That bright red background, and the beautiful detail on his weirdo face. Goudey at its best, though the Riggs Stephenson is my favorite Goudey Cubs card. Johnny Schmitz is in there at #78. I've got his Bowman rookie and hope to get the Leaf one day.

Yes, I'm on the lookout for a Ramly, particularly a Wildfire Schulte. And I went with the T201 for Hofman as a sneaky way to have two Three-Finger Brown cards.

Shankweather 07-02-2018 10:17 PM

Yu Darvish is still holding steady as the 1,420th greatest Cub ever.

New cards! The lovely postcard (addressed on the back to Miss Edna Jacobson, thanks for hanging on to it ma'am) features players 12, 81, 88, 48, 26, 37, 993, 38, 65, 160, 11, 50, 205, 33, 64, 1172, 19, 68, and 16 from the top 100-ish Cubs. The fella in the bowler is C.G. Williams, team secretary and treasurer.

The E95 is Solly Hofman, #88 (again).

That was during Frank's goth faze.

Actually it's just a post office stamp, you can see the top of it above his head.

Sean 07-19-2018 05:59 PM

Okay, now I see it.

Shankweather 07-20-2018 09:24 AM

Some Cubbie loot from the HA auction last night! Players 31, 80, 58, and 22. I never thought I'd get a Cracker Jack Alexander graded as high as 5. Of course I could afford it only because it's misgraded and is actually more like a 4, and everyone knew it. But hey that label says 5! And that Pfeffer shows him in a Louisville jersey, my hometown, so that's fun.

I really wanted that Mayo's Cut Plug Dahlen graded SGC 6, but I couldn't swing that one and the Grover. $3840 is quite a ransom for that Dahlen, but it sure is pretty. Now to sell some cards so I can pay off my credit card!

Sean 07-20-2018 04:58 PM

That is a great Alexander. :)

OT- I just watched LaStella and Caratini pitch for the Cubs today. I hope that this is the low point of the season for the Cubs.
