T205s Year of Issue?
I have always been curious as to why the T205 set is considered to be a 1911 issue, mainly because of the New York American team is designated as the Yankees and they were not officially the Yankees until 1913. Was the Yankees moniker a nickname but not official prior to 1913?
I am sure there is a good answer but as long as I have been around have not seen it. Thanks for any help, Lee |
AFAIK, the New York Highlanders were also referred to as the Yankees from basically from their inception. Supposedly their proper name was too long for newspapers, etc. maybe they did not formally adopt the name until 1913, but they were definitely also known as the Yankees before then.
I think that the reason why the T205 set has always been dated as 1911 is because the last line of stars on the back of the cards is 1910. |
Agreed. Also, note the many other issues that carried the Yankee reference in the 1910-12 time frame--p2 pins, px7 discs, and s74 silks come to mind. In fact Lee, your beloved T202s also pre-date the 1913 decision to "officially" call the team the Yankees.

Furthermore, dates on the Minor Leaguer's bios suggest to us that T205's were printed as late as the Fall of 1911. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...eneecadfri.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...neecadfriB.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...tmerphecol.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...erphecolBx.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
Also the Addie Joss card wouldn't make much sense in any other year.

The first run of t205s was printed and distributed in 1911 as evidenced by not only the stats but by advertisements of the period. The minor leaguers and Joss were printed later, late 1911 or early 1912 if I recall, and most likely distrubited in 1912. If you search the archives here, I think I wrote about this once before using the minor league cards and a few of the team changes to nail down some more accurate dates.

Thanks Josh, If anyone knows the whole history it would be you. Thanks for all your research.

T205 on Net574
I found this thread from a few years back that had some lively discussion about the T205 issue date, including some input from Joshua:
