Forget about $700: even at $75 per beat-up common, T209 certainly appears to me to be a "hot set." The days of buyin' em for $10-15 are over.<br /><br />We're seeing something similar with T210, clearly. Soon it may be only the commonest pre-WW1 sets that AREN'T "hot".<br /><br />Tim<br />

Posted By: <b>jay behrens</b><p>Popular and hot are not the same thing. T206s and 33Gs are always popular, but they are far from hot. I've sold several 33Gs recently and the bidding and prices realized are anything but hot. I'd same more like downright cold, unless it is high grade, slabbed cards.<br /><br />Hot is cards like t210, e-cards, t209, etc that show continued, rapid price rises and demand for the cards. You don't see this with t206s or 33Gs.<br /><br />Jay<br><br>My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Bargains are still there all the time if you look.<br />Can someone explain to me why Irving would draw so much attention and cost over $700, especially in that kind of shape? Is it rare within the set? My 2 cents is that the T209s were very affordable until sellers started dumping the series 1 color cards on ebay and getting high prices, they just seemed to pull the black and whites up with them, although not nearly as high.

Posted By: <b>tobacco-r-us</b><p>I got home about 7PM Friday 9th Sept.<br />Picked up my mail, and found a pink slip from the USPS saying "Hey, you weren't here, so you're going to have to pass by the Post Office and pick up Irving tomorrow."<br />I said to myself, "Now this is the kind of fast transactions I like."<br /><br />Sat. 10th Sept comes around, and I get myself ready to go to the Post Office before they close.<br />My turn comes up, and I step up to the counter with a smile om my face, my pink slip along with my drivers picture ID.<br />The gentleman checked my ID, took my pink slip and went to somewhere in the back.<br /><br />At first, I thought that he had decided to take his last break.<br />Then I thought that maybe he had quit.<br />But the worst scenario was beginning to sink in.<br />He's having trouble finding Irving.<br /><br />That was verified when he finally came back with no package, and a white piece of paper that had something printed on it.<br />When he asked me for my phone number, that's when I knew that there was going to be trouble, right here in River City.<br />The gentleman was very nice, and I know that he didn't have an answer at the moment, I gave him my phone number.<br /><br />Needless to say, although I was still smiling, my spirits were very low - as I watched Irving riding out into the sunset.<br />His supervisor happened to walk by, and he called her for me.<br />She was very pleasant, we went to a corner and we had a very pleasant chat.<br />It was around 12:30pm, she told me that they will continue the search and also try to find out who the delivery person might have been - in any case, she will call me one way or the other.<br />I went back home, and at 5;39PM - she called.<br /><br />"Irving has been found, and he wants to come home to fill that slot."<br /><br />There is a Card God. ... <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14><br /><br />Joe

Posted By: <b>Scot</b><p>Great card and congratulations! The post office lost my collection of eighteen - 1914 T213 Coupon backs about 5 years ago. They were never recovered. I was paid off by the post office but, it still stung. Registered USPS Mail is the only way to go (from then on).

It's been almost four years .....
 

It's been almost four years since I've added a card to the T209 type II set.
The Irving card was the 219th card added to my set. ... I'm still hopeful. :)
Vintage set collectors will understand ... others will not.

What's over the next hill? :)

Ok - I'm going to bite... what's up with Irv in the set? Joe, fill me in!

I wish life was as easy as this.

Let's talk Pack Talk.
Let's say that you've been collecting packs since the 1980's.
You've been to all the big shows from coast to coast.
Talked to dealers from coast to coast.
Done the early write in auctions, phone auctions, and the in person auctions.
eBay comes into play in the late 1990's ... and still no sight of The No Seeum cigarette pack.

Then in 2005 it happens ... the elusive No Seeum cigarette pack is up for auction.

Let's fast forward to the instant replay of the Contentnea type II Irving card.

It just happened that the under bidder had just found out my want list for the T209 type II set.
It was an unintentional goof by a friend. ... Thus the high numbers.

The understanding of the insanity of the high numbers, can only be understood by a vintage set collector, or an equally unbalance pack collector. :)

:) funny this post is 4 years old.... I was going to answer and say they were really hot about 4 years ago when they were often on eBay selling for good $$$ (The B&W ones).

They were really hot then, dont know about now though :)

You're right!

There's been a change from then, and now.

If the Investor/flippers don't play their bids right, they can easily become collectors. :)

Collectors are still the same ... totally insane, and they don't mind enrolling new collectors to the fold ... especially investor/flippers. :)

That's the difference between an investor/flipper, and a collector.
I/F's look at cards as a stock in their portfolio.
Collectors look at cards as a missing piece to fill an empty slot in a set.
They don't give a rats @ss if the set is popular, or not.
They like the cards for a totally different reason than an investor.
They try to keep it as a sublimation ... not that there's anything wrong with investing. :)

Frankly speaking, I would prefer that any set that I'm interested in, be unpopular with the investors. :)

T209-2 is a great set with some real rarities and Joe is, as far as I am concerned, the number one guy for this set. From my limited experience I would characterize it as a set that is easy to make progress in, up to a point, but virtually impossible to finish. Is it popular? I guess as popular as a minor league set can be, which is not very. It is for the die hard collectors, not for the slabbers--not many PSA 9's floating around.

Like I've always said ... when it comes to cards ... It's the luck of the draw.
