Topps League Leader - Trivia

My trivia questions have been fairly well received, so I'm offering another. You wanna try Googling the answer? Good luck with that. This answer requires thinking, and maybe some looking thru your sets (which is fun, regardless of whether you come up with the answer or not...
Postwar Baseball cards (pre-1980): There have been 11 regular issue baseball cards whereby that player was also depicted on a League Leader card in the same set... with a different team. Gimme the regular issue card (player, year and team), and (of course) I'd want the team he represented on his League Leader card. Legitimately. No trick question. Go.

Man, I can't think of any!

Some should be obvious (think guys traded off good seasons), others are ridiculously hard (some very obscure players have appeared on League Leader cards).

I know one is a 1966 Leaders card of Hank Aaron listed as an Atlanta Braves and wearing a Milwaukee Braves cap. Probably others like that as well.

No no no. No trick question. The leader cards in question, players are depicted with different franchises than their regular issue cards from the same set. Legitimately.

jason.1969 08-27-2018 12:50 PM

Okay, I have one. 1966 Frank Robinson.

Okay a start. Probably the easiest of the 11... but once you get one, the others fall into place.

jstef 08-27-2018 12:53 PM

Luis Aparicio 1963

SB leader with the White Sox, regular card with the Orioles

But there was no SB leader card, was there?

Cliff Bowman 08-27-2018 01:33 PM

1963 Pete Runnels

JollyElm 08-27-2018 02:38 PM

It must at least partly involve the vagaries of expansion years, yes?

Correct (that was one of the tougher ones). So far we have:
1) 1963 Runnels (Hou / Bos)
2) 1966 F. Robinson (Balt / Cin)

stlcardsfan 08-27-2018 02:46 PM

Matty or Jesus Alou? Both on '69 Hitting Leaders.

commishbob 08-27-2018 02:48 PM

Looking at one right now (I think)

Dick Stuart...65 league leader in RBI as Red Sox but he was someplace in the NL in '65. I should look it up. LOL

Correct. So far:
1) 1963 Runnels (Hou / Bos)
2) 1965 D. Stuart (Phi / Bos)
3) 1966 F. Robinson (Balt / Cin)

commishbob 08-27-2018 03:01 PM

Catfish Hunter on '75 Wins leaders card as A...was a Yankee that year.

nolemmings 08-27-2018 03:04 PM

1971 Tony Conigliaro, from Bosox to Angels

Incorrect, as Cat's 1975 card was in an A's uniform.

1964 Jim Bunning, Phils regular and Tigers LL

1) 1963 Runnels (Hou / Bos)
2) 1964 Bunning (Phi / Det)
3) 1965 D. Stuart (Phi / Bos)
4) 1966 F. Robinson (Balt / Cin)
5) 1971 T. Conigliaro (Cal / Bos)

Cliff Bowman 08-27-2018 03:19 PM

1978 Larry Hisle.

jason.1969 08-27-2018 03:29 PM

Am guessing this one doesn't count, but 1972 NL Pitching (Wins) leaders shows Carlton on the Cards, but he has a 1972 Topps Traded card with Phils.

jason.1969 08-27-2018 03:40 PM

This one is legit. 1977 Bill Campbell - Bosox on regular card and Twins on Leading Firemen.

I wouldn't count traded cards as regular issue. 72 Steve Carlton, 74 Mike Marshall, and 76 Mickey Rivers are not answers in this trivia question.

jason.1969 08-27-2018 04:03 PM

In hunting for answers I found a guy where Topps used his same pic on Leaders card and regular card. That can be a side trivia question here.

C'mon. Only 4 left, though two are ridiculously difficult; One not so hard; and one a guy mentioned above, but in a different card set.

Cliff Bowman 08-27-2018 05:32 PM

I found one that should have been but was a mistake by Topps, Dick Donovan led the AL in ERA in 1961 for the Washington Senators but on the 1962 Topps AL ERA Leaders card he is mistakenly listed as a member of Cleveland, on his regular card he is listed with the Cleveland Indians who he was traded to after the 1961 season was over.

jason.1969 08-27-2018 05:41 PM

Your hint helped a lot. Jim Bunning also in 1968. Leaders with Phils and regular with Bucs.

BTW -- My answer is correct -- your question specified different TEAM not different FRANCHISE. Sorry but I will play semantics on trivia questions -- having been paid on several occasions to write those and hearing all the objections

Correct. Only 3 more left. So far...
1) 1963 Runnels (Hou / Bos)
2) 1964 Bunning (Phi / Det)
3) 1965 D. Stuart (Phi / Bos)
4) 1966 F. Robinson (Balt / Cin)
5) 1968 Bunning (Pit / Phi)
6) 1971 T. Conigliaro (Cal / Bos)
7) 1977 Bill Campbell (Bos / Min)
8) 1978 Hisle (Mil / Min)

Hint for the last 3: They would all fit in between #'s 6 & 7 on the above list.

I would argue that the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Braves were the same team. I understand the thought process, as many trivia questions use silly tricks that make them less trivia and more annoying. I think you understand the spirit of the question though.

Peter_Spaeth 08-27-2018 08:09 PM

Reggie maybe? Seaver?

Cliff Bowman 08-27-2018 08:23 PM

Geez, this is becoming painstaking, 1971 Bob Johnson.

Cliff Bowman 08-27-2018 08:30 PM

1972 Dave Roberts, although I believe the Padre pictured on the League Leader card is a photo of another Padre.

Cliff Bowman 08-27-2018 10:02 PM

Missed this one because I mistakenly thought he was on one of the high numbered Traded cards, 1972 Lee May.

quitcrab 08-28-2018 04:16 AM

How about a 1972 Frank Robinson as an Oriole on a leader card and as a Dodger in the traded series.

That's all of them.
1) 1963 Runnels (Hou / Bos)
2) 1964 Bunning (Phi / Det)
3) 1965 D. Stuart (Phi / Bos)
4) 1966 F. Robinson (Balt / Cin)
5) 1968 Bunning (Pit / Phi)
6) 1971 T. Conigliaro (Cal / Bos)
7) 1971 Bob Johnson (Pit / KC)
8) 1972 Lee May (Hou / Cin)
9) 1972 Dave Roberts (Hou / SD)
10) 1977 Bill Campbell (Bos / Min)
11) 1978 Hisle (Mil / Min)

I wasn't counting guys on traded cards - there was also 1972 Carlton, 1974 Mike Marshall & 1976 Mickey Rivers - but I'm happy to give partial credit on this one.
