Miscut? Confused on these two Mathewson’s

Can someone explain why one is a miscut and the other isn’t? Older/sloppy grading? The reg EX5 is a Polar Bear back… are those more forgiving on the grade? Appreciate the feedback

No issues with the backs though? The (MC) actually looks just a hair better than the other, at least top to bottom cut, which is a head scratcher. Maybe they're taking into account the left to right cut as well which looks a bit better on the top card?

Thanks for the reply! Here's the backs for both:

I'd say older grade, before the days of qualifiers. The back not be as dramatic of a miscut probably played into the grade as well. My 2 cents.

100 more forgiving back in the day. Are both these your cards?

I agree with the others that the older flips were during a time when PSA was a lot more lenient with the grading and the qualifiers.

Neither mine (yet), both on eBay. Been looking for an Ex or better dark cap to complement the Mathewson portrait and silk have already. Love the look and dramatic colors vs the white cap.

I agree with Gary above. It is likely the old PSA grade versus new PSA standards.
