Topps Baseball Folders

I just came across the 1998-90 Topps baseball folders. I guess I should have known that with Topps running the presses 24/7 in the late 80's that they would be printing their cards on every available piece of paper and in almost every size. My question is, Does any one know how many different Topps folders were produced in 1988, 1989, and 1990? Thanks

Do you mean folders as in portfolios like a student would bring to school with them? If so, I do recall seeing these but (I think in 1988 form) but have no other information on them.

They are actually called Topps Duo-Tang Sport Shots Folders, and the same company made a 91’ set as well but it did not use a Topps design.

I believe 88’ had 130 subjects, 89’ was 39, and I have no idea what 90’ was honestly. I think the Standard Catalog has 88 and 89 in my old copy, not sure if 90’ was ever added.

Edit:
Found this list for 1990

Thanks for this - I knew I needed at least one from 1989 (for my Dwight Evans PC) but I was never calling them the right thing in eBay searches (got the name from TCDB) - now I see there's a bunch out there, just no Dewey yet. Also, according to those checklists there's also a 1988 Evans and a 1988 Rice. TCDB doesn't list those.

Pretty sure TCDB's admin decided against including them since they are not 'cards'. It is a very gray area as to what non-card stuff is included.

Thanks for the info. Yes, this is what I was referring to. 139 different folders in 1988 is impressive.

I have all 3 “sets” …. at least I think so. Have never seen a checklist for 90. The checklists for 88 and 89 used to be in the Standard Catalog

They take up a lot of room

There was a discussion of these on FCB ages ago when someone found an advertising piece for 1987, but the consensus was that the 1987 folders were never actually produced. There was also a 1991 set that was no longer based on Topps designs.

These were the 1990s we documented at the time, but this was like 10 years ago.

100 Will Clark
130 Bert Blyleven
185 Ruben Sierra
200 Don Mattingly
205 Mark Davis
210 Ryne Sandberg
240 Mark Grace
250 Jose Canseco
260 Eric Davis
270 Dave Stewart
290 Robin Yount
316 Carney Lansford
350 Bret Saberhagen
460 Mike Scott
500 Kevin Mitchell
510 Doc Gooden
560 Steve Sax
580 Joe Carter
610 Pedro Guerrero
680 Howard Johnson
700 Kirby Puckett
730 Tony Gwynn
760 Wade Boggs
780 Orel Hershiser

I remember finding the 88s being sold at the 99 cent store in the late 1990s. I remember Nolan Ryan and Joe Carter galore. 99 cent store used to be good for baseball related items, I picked up Astros baby items there and various books over the years. The last few years nothing.

Like all my other sets I keep an “unopened pack” with the 88s and 89s Never got one for 90

Will check what I have for 90 against your list when I get the chance Jason. Good thing they did not do any ceramics for them

Before the Standard catalog went "vintage" I do believe they catalogued some if not all of these sets. If someone wants to go back and check that would be a help to this thread

Note: I did want to include these in the Almanac as it was the Almanac of Cards and Collectibles but by the time i (we) started working on these Topps did not have any checklists on these sets

Rich— I mentioned above they did appear in the catalog for 88 and 89 but as far as i know not 90. Hope to check my “set” against Jason’s list soon to see if I need any or have any not on his list. Think they were list as Sport Shot Portfolios
