Posted By: Jimmy
Joe,

I collect a lot of D&M items - picked this one up at a local auction in New England, Conn. I think - was a phone bid - no hat, but did get the pants as well with label intact. I won a Joe Wood auto, T206 Mathewson, 1935 Chicle Football card and a few other items. I will sell the cards on ebay soon to help pay for the uniform and autograph - your trophy is very nice, these can be hard to get at times.

Take Care

Posted By: Joe K.
I just cleaned the trophy with Carbona Precious Metal Wipes. Very easy product to use and it did a fantastic job of removing almost 100% of the tarnish. I don't usually fret too much about some tarish, but I would highly recommend this product if anyone is looking for something that is quick, easy and effective.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Donald, I saw that one too and contemplated it. I don't like the fact that it looks like he's wearing a suit underneath the bib uniform....not that that means it's not baseball, because he could have been getting a portrait photo taken in his nice suit also and just threw the jersey on over it. Photos like that where there is no provenance, identification or equipment in the photo are kind of iffy and you may never know.

Could be a fireman, or it could be a ballplayer??? It's still a nice photo.

Posted By: barrysloate
Donald- I was about to answer your question but Dan said everything I was about to say. Without equipment you will never be certain; chances are it's a fireman. The suit under the jersey doesn't look right for a ballplayer, although Dan did have a plausible theory. If I were a betting man, I'd go with not baseball.

Posted By: Donald Johnson
Thanks guys! Does anyone have any photos for comparison's sake? I'd be interested to see what the finer distinctions were between a fireman's bibbed uniform and a baseball bibbed uniform.

Posted By: barrysloate
I'm not sure there is a distinction. In fact, in the early days of the game, many baseball players were firemen by trade. I belive both the Eckfords and Excelsiors were firemen at one time.

That would of course suggest a man in a fireman's uniform very well might be a baseball player, but without a bat and ball it's purely speculation.

Posted By: barrysloate
The guys with the A's on their uniform are pretty cool. First, the photo was taken by a prominent award winning photographer. Second, all the players are identified on the back. I will guess the "A" stands for Amherst, and if I had to pick a date, I would say 1878, give or take a couple of years.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Two new additions to my hall of famers snapshot collection...the Lopez is autographed. The other photo is Bill McKechnie. Obviously both are from 1939 and probably taken at the same game since they came from the same group of photos.
