Lou Gehrig Worlds fair logo

Just picked up this Lou Gehrig Type 1 photo and its date stamped March 1938 but isn't the logo on his uniform a 1939 Worlds fair logo?

I am sure it was promoted well in advance. As this was in New York I am sure the logo was used to drum up interest in the upcoming event, so it would not be a surprise that they were promoting it the year before.

Thanks...that makes sense!

According to Wikipedia the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees all wore that on their left sleeves in 1938. No cite

1939 New York Worlds Fair

The 1939 Worlds Fair patch was in fact worn by all three New York teams and this is easy enough to confirm through other period images that can be dated to 1938. These include the 1938 All Star as well the 1938 World Series. dated images from the Sporting News and contemporary newspapers as well.

Other examples include Babe Ruth with the Dodgers in 1938 (only one year). In 1939 (some teams as early as spring training), you will see the Baseball Centennial patch.

Christy Walsh never missed a beat the Academy of Sport was his brain child and he had influence with sport celebrities to showcase them at the World Fair. I am sure this project was well underway in the mid thirties. Lou Gehrig did appear at the Academy of Sport as an instructor in 1939 Please Check out my web site under collection for more details www.1939baseball.com
